I've noticed alot lately that whilst out in my V12V that I can't stop my self from repeatedly trying to shift to a 7th or higher gear than the box has to offer.
Now is this common amongst the lucky few??? or is it just me becoming a crusty old git.....
That said I'm considering switching to Auto with a DBS or possibly a Vanquish S in mind so if any of you can offer any advise or indeed have turned in that direction yourselves your input would be greatly appreciated.
I tried the auto DBS around Millbrook and was hugely impressed by its relaxed effortless drive coupled to its sporty
response when asked,I really did like it, but how would the more modern technologies of the DBS stack up against a late Vanquish S for instance that I haven't driven as yet.
Well thanks for your thoughts so heres hoping that I've not turned CRUSTY........

Red line in 5th is at about 159mph. Red line in 6th is about 190mph

Where on earth are you driving to need a 7th gear???? ;-)

Sportshift on the new Vantage S has 7 speeds.

At the cost of 4 cylinders and of course your dignity as well!

TT just doesn't interest me, maybe if the car was a daily driver but we have a Land Rover and a Golf for that!

Yes we're starting to warm nicely to it now,all as expected and totally constructive. I should really add the
DB9 into the equation to stoke up the Jock and further induce George.
Nice slippers and pipe, I must admit to being taken by those, now how about a smoking jacket or may be a XKRS...

Keep it up my OH will have a field day with this, thanks loads,Crusty.........

DBS is quite a bit faster according to this.

Easy on the DB9 comments, I thought you V12V owners were alright, at least having a modicum of sense and having a V12! biggrin

Crusty Eduardo - I think you are heading in the right direction with the DBS, so best not to retreat to the DB9 unless you´re coming from a V8V.

The modern TT is EXACTLY as you say it is. I was driving automatic BMWs in the late 1980s and my 09 TT bears no resemblance to such days. Glad you´ve adopted a considered opinion. When I get an open stretch of motorway and I floor the V12 the power is phenomenal and the gear changes are as smooth as my wife´s bum. No probs with manual lovers feeling a higher degree of engagement with the car.

I am sitting in a villa in Southern Spain with my slippers on marble floors, so I suppose I could be getting equally crusty.

As for inducing George, just mention the word ´volante´ and he goes all gooey smile

Yep, and the V8 Vantage 4.3 is faster than the DBS on those (or other listed) tracks!
Must be the weight of the extra cylinders, the pipe, slippers and smoking jacket that slows it down wink

Well so far so good we've discovered the DBS is "in track terms" faster than the Vanquish S but still some how it does look particularly well stated in red as in the photos on the site George kindly pointed out.
I think I should drive one to see if they're as smooth as they look rather than take Clarkson's word for it about the
gearbox and never mind the pipe and slippers.
Mind you having tested the DBS TT I must admit to being rather smitten which then leads to the good old question of
should it be Coupe or Volante?.
Both look wonderful but lack the practicality of the V12V's hatch back facility which I do find useful when carrying
long lengths of rough sawn timber or old drain pipes which leads me to think the Volante would be more suited to me.
We've also discovered than our good friend Jockman is chilling out in Spain sporting a pair of hopefully Tartan slippers protecting those delicate toes from that highly abresive marble floor he's having to tread and that Neil has a stash of pictures for all occasions.
My wife has given up taking the p*ss now and has lost all interest in my topic and is more concerned about Di's
fox invasion leaving me to worry about motoring decisions and more concerning the thought of a Scotsman scoffing
Paella whilst sporting fluffy mules.
So thanks for the input so far its been great.....

Do you need to ask - Volante of course smile

The TT2 gearbox is brilliant imo, the paddles are really good fun (especially in sport mode where it really blips the engine on downshifts). Plus auto is great for when you can't be bothered, like in traffic jams.

would you like a ride in my Civic Type R? 6200rpm before it even thinks about getting going? 80mph 4000 RPM, no its not tiring on the M4 wink

I always thought a a vario-matic / centrafugal clutch type top gear would be good for cruising.... if its producing the torque then use it all' at a constant/cruising speed and reduce the rpm's as a result.....
