No F1 car ever goes out with enough fuel to finish the race at the fastest setting on the engine.

So to answer your question, yes. I wouldn't want to be carrying around a few extra laps worth of fuel that might be costing 0.1 - 0.2 seconds per lap unnecessarily. Could be the difference between first and second.

George, my understanding is that you start the race with the fuel left over from qualifying ???

My question therefore alluded to the final pit stop on approx lap 42 and the cock up in calculating sufficient fuel for the final 10 laps. Surely the previous 42 laps had provided the team with this info ??

As for Button´s wheel nut, I think the lollipop man has taken it on the chin. No hand on top of the wheel means keep the lolly in place smile
Nope you run in qualifying with the minimum fuel possible (outlap, fast lap, inlap), hence why they are so much quicker than race pace. The top 10 start with the same tyres used for qualifying though if that is what you mean.

They also don't refuel, so they predict what is going to be required for the race beforehand. Really they should have told Lewis before there was 10 laps left, so he would have had to make a less drastic change to his driving style or engine mapping.
