Hi All,

I'm think of moving my car to Berlin - for various reasons, not least the tempting "no-limit" motorways where the V12V can go above 70 - and was wondering if anyone had any advice or experiences of doing this?

some things I can think of....

a. I believe I'll have to permanently swap the headlights to the side over there - heard about £2k for a new set?
b. Any idea what insurance is like in Germany in comparison to UK?
c. I imagine it's paper work hell - any ideas on the process?

On the storage front, I'm looking at the Meilenwerk (http://www.meilenwerk.de/Meilenwerk_Berlin_index.php) which acts as both storage and museum - so if that goes ahead the car will be in a museum, but with 24/7 access. Got to be secure as some locals like setting fire to expensive cars....

Any help, advice, pointers would be really helpful (and good jokes I'm sure)

Many thanks in advance
David

Btw - if you're in Berlin and not been to the Meilenwerk, definately worth a visit with lots of interesting cars to see (e.g. AM Shooting brake - 1 of only 4 I think), Sunday brunch with live jazz band, etc. and entrance is free...

I lived in Berlin for 15 years and had a great time on their autobahns with various nice cars including my V8V. However I'm not sure from your post whether you're actually intending living out there or just taking the car there, storing it and using it when you make special trips out to it. Really can't see why anyone would want to do that, if indeed it is what you intend.

I spend a lot of time in Berlin and looking for a more permanent move move to Berlin - so can't see me going back to the UK just to drive the car there so guess it'll mean re-registering etc....

Mr Gould - thanks for the enlightenment!! :-)

Hi
If its any help I had my V8 and my later DB9 have an adjustable conversion at Lancaster Sevenoaks which cost around £400 which involves two cables under the bonnet on either side which results in, I can't remember which way round for the moment, in that just a push for one setting and pull for the other and you have complete flexibility for UK and Euro driving. Takes lifting the bonnet and then all of 30 seconds to switch from UK to Euro. In my view simple and effective solution and avoids the hassle of the alternatives.

I'd leave it on UK plates, I'd estimate only about 20% of the autobahns around Berlin are derestricted and the police don't mess around over there painting their speed cameras and vans in bright colours. In fact exactly the opposite, they hide them behind trees and crash barriers. Must have saved me a fortune over the years only running on UK plates.

Hiya,

I moved back from Germany about 3 months ago after spending nearly four years there with work, two of which with my old V8V coupe.

I swapped the entire headlights as being as I was living over there I didn't want just the 'flat beam' conversion. From memory they cost me about £850 per light for LHD!! Thinking about it, I've still got them if you're interested! Not sure if they're the same for a V12V but they are the HID ones so PM me if interested.

Insurance I found was a bit of a killer, but again I can advise some companies if you plan on a permanent move. Autobahns were great. It was quite a struggle getting back to the UK limits having been used to happliy cruising at 120-130mph everywhere - and that's just keeping up with the rest of the traffic!

The one downside is when there is an accident the resultant stau is a nightmare!

Let me know if you want more info.

Are Germans already on Michael's list, or do they need to be added?

No passenada, Don.

I believe they are approx number 4 (excl AngelXXX).

Unfortunately the full list is on my UK computer and I´m having enough trouble negotiating this Spanish Keyboard in any case.

Will replenish list, with removal of Scots as requested, upon my return.

If he thinks he´s getting another list he can kiss my.............smile

Who even wears a bowtie with the exception of a wedding? They do look awkward to tie though.

They are a piece of piss to tie. And there are times when one looks undressed without one.
