Hi guys,

Loving the V8V! It certainly eats petrol but then who cares right wink

Only gripe I have is shifting into 1st and 2nd, even once the gearbox oil has heated up it's still a bit of a struggle at times. I've read that's simply a cable selection issue so i'm not too worried about it however I have a couple of questions:

- is it damaging the car in any way?
- is it a quick/cheap fix?

Have read this (http://www.derbymotorservices.co.uk/faq/questions/15/Aston+Martin+V8+Vantage+difficult+1st+and+2nd+gear+selection) however i'm trying to decide if I just live with it until I have some spare cash lying about to fix it or if I just go straight to the dealer and sort it.

Car is a 06 V8V with 12k miles.

Cheers guys
Lewis

Hi Lewis,

I believe there is a service bulletin for this from AM, it should be resolved at no cost to you?

Others can confirm, but I believe this is a "feature" of some of the early Vantages.

Even if it costs to fix, why let it marr your enjoyment of a great car?

I've got a 2008 V8 4.3 with the same issue. It really spoils the car in my view, and I cant believe, with all the testing they did, AM did not know about it before it went on sale!

I did know about this before I bought mine because I prowled this website for a year before buying, and built a list of 'common faults'. Once thing that influenced me to look for a 2007/2008 was that I got the impression a factory mod had addressed the 1st/2nd gear selection issue.

Anyway, mine is a absolute PIG in the winter when cold (even though its garaged) and I have to go from 1st to neutral, do a right-left movement, then into 2nd. Once warm its good (but nowhere near as slick other cars I've had), but I've developed a 'technique' to get into second without sounding like I've just passed my test! I get mine serviced at DMS and Rick put different oil in it.

Also, I posted this issue on the Bamford Rose thread and Mike said:

Hi Vantager.

Do you know if any corrective measures have ever been applied to the gearbox in your cars history?

Firstly, it must be said that the gearbox itself is a fantastic unit and is a credit to the suppliers engineering capability (Grazziano). The gearbox is used in GT4 racing cars where it gets a real punishing, and more-or-less the same configuration is used by Noble. There are few reported leaks (leaks on ASM’s are mainly ASM related not the base gearbox), crunchy synchros or catastrophic failures. In my opinion the quality of this product gets a bad reputation both in manual and ASM form down to the factory’s application of the gearbox to their cars through poor selector cables on manual and electronic ASM control issues, which most people think is the gearbox, which it isn’t, it’s the electronic selector mechanism bolted onto the original manual gearbox that is mostly at fault.

A factory service ‘fix’, included oil additives / modified oil, a change to the selector cables and selector arm, but at best, I think the ‘bulking’ feeling was only lessened.

For all GT4 / N24 race cars we fit our own uprated selector cables and an improved short shift mechanism. If you are a critical customer in-tune with how gear selection feels cold, you would be welcome to try these modifications FOC and report back…. They were not specifically designed to cure the cold ‘bulking’ issue – these parts overcome racing issues the standard parts were not man enough for. But I can only think these products would help the cold ‘bulking’ issue.

Mike.

I think I'd like to take Mike up on this offer, but will wait until winter as thats when things get bad. In the summer I tend to forget about it because I can always get 2nd in the warmer weather!

I should say also, despite all its foibles, this is a really gorgeous car.
It draws admirers wherever you go with it, without the nasty bit that can come with some other marques.

I'll need to look into that bulletin and see if it's the case. I believe it is if it's under warranty (which mine is, but not with an AM warranty) but I could be completely wrong.

Oh and it's not spoiling the enjoyment at all - just a bit annoying. I've just bought the car a few days ago, along with the clear tail light upgrade, insurance (i'm only 24 so it's a sore one) and holiday to keep SWMBO happy so if it can wait until next months pay packet then happy days, if not then needs must and i'll sort it, that's the only reason I asked smile

Have you tried - clutch down, out of first, clutch up, clutch down and into second? That was what I used to do in my V8. Just an option.

It does seem to baulk at quick changes, so much I don't even try these days. Generally I go 1st to 3rd if I'm in lazy mode.

Double declutching is an excellent way to match the revs to the gear selection to ensure smooth changes. I first used that many year ago on my 1275GT mini when the synchro went betweeen first and second. It carried over to my various other sports cars and is a good method to use.

Very useful on the wagons and HGVs.

No idea it would be useful on an Aston smile

Can't help you there. I don't see why not though. It's still a useful way of ensuring the cogs engage at the right speeds.

Does it not make gear changes take twice as long though?

It can do, but you get faster with practice. To be honest, i've not used it in a while as my current car is an auto.

So do any of these problems/solutions damage the gearbox/clutch then?

From reading the posts above it sounds like it's just an inconvenience!

Oh and on the warranty front i'm going down to Aston on Saturday so will let you know how I get on!!

I had this problem on mine and it turned out that the clutch system just needing bleeding. So it may be something simple.

smile Have to say I knew I would love it but I didn't think I would love it this much! Not even thought about the Exige since I took delivery of the V8V.
