Hello there my venerable PH Aston brothers...

Anyway, a friend of mine is looking to purchase a V8V roadster.

Max budget @£60k. The intention is the car would be a (5-10yr) keeper for high days and holidays.

Other than being an admirer from afar, I know very little about the Marque/Models.
I've had a run through the most recent postings on here.

But I'd welcome any advice on gotchas, or things to watch out for, spec etc.
Manual vs sportshift.

She's seen one at Murrays (in Edinburgh I think) and I said I'd have a dig around before she pulled the trigger. She has test driven one.

I agree, nice spec and the 4.7 is a lot better than the 4.3!

You need to buy Grant's book - everything you would ever want to know about the Gaydon Astons.

Tom - the car is indeed well loved, but Mikey's a pain in the arse, and he can't stop winking at you wink

The 'K' stands for Knowle(s) as in Knowledge. He's a walking encyclopedia.

Like fine wines, provenance of these cars is of the utmost importance. If I were in the market for a V8V Roadster I would cetainly be sending him a pm smile

whistle

There are a few things specific to the roadster to look out for;
1) Partially open the roof and look at the ends of the middle support bar, the covers come off and it wears through the roof.
2) Whilst your doing it look at how much debris is in the roof well, anything significant amount and it will mark the inside of the roof when stowed down
3) Check the boot opens properly, it is interlocked to the roof and has been know to prevent the boot opening.
4) Same goes for the fuel flap - they seem to break more on roadsters.
5) Check the doors for rattles when they close the glass has less support on the roadster (none when the roof is down!)

Buy one with a Sports Pack wink
Fancy a trip to Cheshire? wink

BTW for a woman I'd recommend sportshift used in manual over a manual
The clutch and gear change are "postive" and do require some effort
I used to hate flappy paddle but this car has converted me (but only when used in manual wink )

Thanks for all the responses so far guys smile

Mikey, thanks for your comments and I have re-iterated the availability of your car.
It was one of the ones I sent her a link to initially when I'd done a spin through PH classifieds.

It's probably just outside her budget. But I am sure it will provide food for thought.
I know she loves BLUE ones. And you know what girls can be like in the way they prioritise (my wife was exactly the same over the colour of our vehicles).

Other than that she was just looking into cost of insurance. She's been on works' insurance for ages and not had a policy of her own for like 5 years but has no accident claims in 20+years.
I'm sure she'd be able to get a letter from her works' insurance to contact any potential insurer...any I digress.

Absolutely look for a 4.7 if you can, I spent a while dithering between the two and in the end I am certainly sure I made the right choice with a 4.7. It's not just the engine changes but everything that comes with it if you can of course.

Don't get me wrong the 4.3 is a fantastic car still, but if they are that close to a 4.7 it would be a shame not to.

You mean this one?

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2804623.htm

In repsonse to your post on the other thread, IMHO it's not selling because;
It's over priced as a run out 4.3 (especially compared to my 4.7 winklaugh )
Wheels and roof are marmite colours

I do like the red stitching though
Is it on approval/SOR with a dealer?

Good roadsters are in short supply according to the dealers so price it right and it ought to move!

No it isn't on SOR. What do you think is a fair price to sell/buy at ? I'm finding it hard to justify reducing more when there isn't anything similar (that I can see at the moment)

I've got the 4.7 and it is a much better option than the 4.3 if the budget will stretch; not just quicker, it sounds incredible. Wasn't a fan of the sportshift though - went for the manual and it is fantastic. It's not a heavy clutch or gear change (unless compared to a fiesta!) I agree with the comment about rattles, but you won't hear them above the roar of the engine, so it's not an issue. Good luck finding the right one... you'll love it!

Have I made a mistake? I drove the 4.3 (with Sportspack) and 4.7 back to back in both manual and auto and there was no real difference aside from the dash. At the time I couldn't see the point in the spending the extra for a 4.7 when the run-out 4.3 was cheaper and much better specced.

Nope !

+1 it's a personal choice I could feel the difference with the 4.7 and find the sport shift in manual far better for long distances.

I agree with Jockman. I'm 'only' getting a 4.3 as I just don't think I can justify the extra expense to myself for the 4.7. Am I worried about this? Dear lord no; it's as Aston Martin! For me, it's a lifelong dream come true and I couldn't be happier!
