Three cars going to Italy next year. Is it feasible to have inter-car communications without using the mobile phones.
I mean so occupants of all three cars can talk to each other en route.

It really depends on the range that wish to cover it could be hand held CB radios or for really short distances say a couple of hundred yards then you could try many of the short range icoms walkie talkie.

I tried this once - bought some radios for around 80 quid... problem was reception was so poor that ended up just using the phones.

CB? Which decade have we gone back to?

We use this sort of thing to keep in touch whilst skiing: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003H3DIB0/ref=asc_df_B...

Pigpen, this here's the rubber duck, I'm about to put the hammer down...

hehe

Anyway, we bought some similar walkie talkies for my son and his friend and they were guff, reception was piss-poor and range about 20m at best.

We had three radios with us at Le Mans this year, was quite good fun really. We didn't use them until we were in a queue of traffic though and were bored.

Skiing yes - motoring no, unless your in traffic or right next to each other you wont get a signal, if you accept this (and maybe want to use them around the resort) check out Doro WT91 for best or just Moto TLKR T4 for cheapies.

Don't be so sure, I've used similar items whilst commissioning on large

industrial sites inside metal clad buildings etc with no problem, maybe spend a little more than the ones above and you'll be fine.

Just dug it out of my drawer:

I've done loads of group Eurohoons.
Always used radios even in the Alps.
Buy EU approved wavelength ones with a decent range (like you see plod, security and footbal stewards using)
DONT but cheap ones from Argos
If you do that range and recption is not an issue unless some one gets truly lost and then you need to stop so use the phone wink

Did the Porsche Experience day at Silverstone a few weeks back and they communicated around the circuit between the driving instructors in the cars by walkie talkie. Signal seemed fine to me.

Looks like the very ones we used at Le Mans this year - range is about a couple of Kilometres but quite useful when somebody sees plod or takes a wrong turn.Take your pnone as well.;)

It should be difficult to hear a radio in an Aston, let alone a Walkie Talkie.

All the one's I've tried have been cr*p. OK when outdoors, but useless when in a car.

So long as you fairly close to each other PMR should be fine

Trust me guys we get loads back when used in car to car comms BUT I cant vouch for the brainpower or integrity of the returners as one of my crew said they may be used for a trip and returned as useless for a refund - naughty but we have to refund if under 30 days

I have the Binatone terrains in the car kit packs with car chargers etc - cheap but tough
Personal fave is a DORO WT91 but also check Moto TLKR T6 or T8 - great radios

Mates rates if anyone wants any or DSLiverpool on ebay, DST UK on Amazon - also check Argos as they give the Binatones away at times

You need a PMR 446 radio (Private Mobile Radio at 446 Mhz). Range of about eight miles; down to about three in heavily built up areas. Licensed for public use in the UK and pretty much most European countries but you need a license to operate them in the USA.

We went for some Motorola XTN446 radios on a Nurburgring trip a few years ago. Motorola are the brand that my local Police force use and are very reliable.

Each radio retails for around the £100 mark give or take.

Hope this helps.
