Thinking of a DB9 or V8V below £40k, wise move? I'm actually surprised at how good condition the lower end of the market seems to be.

Thinking along the lines of this DB9 or this V8V. Is an AM dealer warranty worth its weight in gold?

Weirdly enough I'm not too bothered on specification or colour, as long as its got the usual FSH, 1-2 owners, and all original paint.

Yes.

Though at that price point you will likely get more V8V for your money than you would DB9.

Very different cars. Do you prefer GTs or more pointy sportscars that need revs?

Both the ones linked to look nice. You'd need to check them out in person to tell properly though.

PS Cars that age will be on the extended warranty which is not as good as the original. But buying from a dealer should give extra "insurance".

If you had the car already and were thinking of buying the warranty, I'd say no.

If you buy from a dealer and it comes with the warranty (as I believe it should), happy days. But check out private sales too to ensure you're not paying too much over the odds.

I think I'd prefer a younger, sportier V8V than a DB9, but its good to consider both.

You could get a brand new one for that, and have change left over smile

Well I don't believe in warranties unless they are free. This forum would suggest that V8V's only suffer from a few small quirks and electrical glitches, most of which are ironed out early in life.

Now I hate to be one to ask about MPG, but is the extra urban figure of 22.6 mpg correct? That seems awfully low for a 4.3 / 380bhp car, my VXR8 with a 6.0 litre Corvette engine did almost 30 and that had more power and was heavier!

I bought a 55 plate V8V in Feb privately for considerably under your budget. The car had gone 3 years without a service and had done 5000 miles in that time.

(No idea why someone driving a car like this would not pay for the annual service - but anyway !)

I had the car checked over at an Aston Dealership, used the report to negotiate the price down on the car and then after the purchase , took the car to Rick at DMS.

Also, I don't have a warranty on the car.

Bought mine in March - an 06 plate well within your budget from a non-AM dealer with one years warranty and an AM service thrown in; it had done 39k miles but was immaculate, fully specced and had full AM history. Already done 2000 miles in it, every one of them with a huge grin on my face, and no issue (fervently touches wood...).

From personal experience, not just AMs, go for one that has been driven and don't worry too much about the miles as long as the car is in good nick and has a decent AM or specialist history; shows it has been looked after and the early niggles should have been ironed out.

Oh - and I agree about the above comments re warranty; mine was thrown in otherwise I wouldn't bother.

Hope this helps...

Great response, xraybloke. I have actually spotted some sub £35k Vantages which I think are worth a look. I'd like less than 60,000 miles though, and the car must appear to be 'fresh', i.e. well polished and conditioned leather.

I looked for ages before buying and was quite surprised at the variation of ones for sale - saw some low mileage examples that were really tatty and some high mileage ones that looked like they had just been driven out of the showroom! I was quite picky though regarding colour and minimum specification which is why it took me as long as it did.

I know what you mean about appearing 'fresh' though - I turned up two hours early to view mine, before they had chance to properly valet the car, and it still looked good and had that AM leather smell.

Great cars...haven't regretted my purchase for one second...

You're on thin ice there Gary. Just wait until they all get up at 0600 tomorrow. You'll get a flurry of Sanatogen fuelled abuse from the DB9ers biggrin

I have no idea what an extra urbane figure is.

Mine has averaged 19.6mpg according to the trip computer at an average speed of 50mph (might be 52mph).

You will not, on any sort of meaningful basis, get 30mpg out of a V8V unless you push it around 50% of the time smile

Gary - on that level of budget, go for the V8V.

Early DB9s could be too problematic for you.

People that buy DB9s usually test drive a V8V to solidify their original sentiments.

It's a pipe and slippers kinda thing smile

You say you are not bothered by Spec / Colour but makes a difference to both price now and resale.

Mileage - don't buy an Aston if you are concerned re mpg. I have had mine do an mpg starting with a 2 but thats only because there was point immediately after it - 2.3mpg IIRC whistle. High teens would be good for around town.
As Murph has already said, you need to think about what you want from the car and how you will use it, DB9 a lovely GT with a big torquey V12, Vantage more sporty, and at the price you are looking at will have the 4.3 engine which needs reving to get the best out of it
Extended Warranties- don't cover everything, basically anying inside the cabin is excluded, but is an insurance policy against any major mechanical failure. Not that I know of many, if the car is lloked after and serviced.

Not bothered about MPG in the slighest, I was just bemused how Aston Martin managed to make it so uneconomical - 16mpg combined must be a record smile

As for specification, well what are the must haves? As long as its got the top range sound system and black leather then thats all I really want, that said, I'm asuming they come with xenons, heated seats and the likes as standard...

If money was no question then I'd go for the DB9, but ultimately I'd prefer a newer, fresher V8V than a slightly ropy DB9. That said, the DB9 in my first postlooks great.

I suspect it was down to the gearing they chose to make the most of the engine.
