I know there have been a fair few posts on sports exhasts in the past, but I am interested in buying an exhaust system that will give the car a nice luxurious low end burble (under the 4000 rev mark). Something in tune with a 70's Interceptor would be great (for those that are old enough to remember them). I am happy with the "roar" over 4000 rpm when it kicks in, but to be honest, find the sound at low revs inconsistant and sometimes quite "weedy". I am not looking for more volume but a richer, deeper sound at low revs. Removing Fuse 22 does not achieve this. Any suggestions would be welcomed. Nearly forgot....it's a 4.3.

If removing fuse 22 doesn't work for you, you'll need a different back box.

Which you go for is down to which you like best.

I have a Tubi on mine, and absolutely love it. If you're near SW London, I'll happily demo it for you.

There are quite a few other choices (Larini, Quicksilver, Milltek I believe).

Thanks for the reply. I am aware of the various options re Larini, QuickSilver etc. I guess what I am asking is which is the best option for a deep low end burble, as opposed to more volume and/or a higher pitched sound. I like the lazy American late 60s/early 70s V8 sort of sound.

You'll need to change the cats to get the burbling at tickover.

They're all on youtube.

Larini - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clO8Wo5gjFQ

Quicksilver - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clO8Wo5gjFQ

Milltek - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBoQG-8F7Hg

I would go for the quicksilver out of those 3.

I'm not sure anyone's ever heard them all in the metal side by side...

YouTube's fine for an indication, but sound quality is usually carp.

I'm not totally convinced you'll get the sound you're looking for. The big yank tanks, Interceptors etc have much, much larger capacity V8s made from different materials. So the thwump, thwump type burbling is more likely than with the V8V's 4.3 alloy one.

Mine makes a great sound at low revs, very worth winding the window down to listen to when burbling along. But it's possibly louder and maybe even higher pitch than you're after. Offer stands if you're ever around SW London.

You can swap out the OEM catalytic convertors for "sports" ones. They also change the sound characteristics....I believe because they have less material in them impeding the sound smile

Pete, I'm not really that anal about exhaust sounds etc. Removal of Fuse 22 suffices for me.

But.........if you're like sMurph and you love to stick on that scarlet basque with your nugget firmly lodged inside the pipe...there is but one decision to make........

Tubi or not Tubi.

That is the question:

Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer

blah, blah...to die, to sleep,

To sleep, perchance to dream – ay, there's the rub:

blah, blah...To grunt and sweat under a weary life,

blah, blah...Thus conscience does make cowards of us all,

blah, blah...And enterprises of great pith and moment,

The fair Ophelia! Nymph, in thy orisons

Be all my sins remembered..............

I prefer the Hamlet soliloquy myself, but good luck with your endeavours.

You've certainly come to the correct forum for advice smile

Thanks for the culture trip. I've taken Murph up on his offer of a demo. Thanks for all the advice guys. I've read these threads for a while now since getting the V8 last December. Had a 996 Turbo for the last 7 years previously so it's all a bit of a change. Some good....some not so good.

Quicksilver for me. Lovely popping on the down changes but not a maxed out sound. Just love it.

I would go for the quicksilver out of those 3.
There are three different Quick Silvers

Sport - similar to stock with F22 pulled
Super Sport - louder down hte low end
Super Sport Plus - Race car loud!

I had straight through pipes on my de catted TVR Griffith which always popped and banged like a good un' when de-accelerating through exactly 2000 revs.

On a good hill with just the right slope she would sit at 2000 revs all the way down giving aural pleasure for what seemed like an age cloud9

The rest of the time she sounded like a Spitfire smile

Are you anywhere near Essex? Hayward & Scott have made a couple of custom exhausts for me and some friends and do exceptional work.

When a pal was in having one made for his 80's 911 Turbo they had a V8V in as well, and it had basically what you're talking about.

When they maneuvered it around it sounded like a 70's muscle car, it was fabulous.

They can pretty much created whatever you ask of them. Plus they'll keep changing it if it doesn't suit until its right.

I'm most definitely not an expert so please don't shoot me if I am wrong.

From what I've read on this subject, you need to go upstream from the back box in order to modify the sound in more interesting ways. A new back box will make the exhaust louder but the rumble is due to the exhaust manifolds - at the engine side. This may give some information:

http://rusubaru.com/equal-length-vs-unequal-length...

I would suggest that Mike at Bamford Rose can probably explain this a lot better - he's a very helpful gentleman with great knowledge of the V8 engine - he designed the N400 improvements among other things.

And no, I have no business dealings or relationship with Bamford Rose.

I have an RSC exhaust that I am very pleased with. It weighs about half as much as the OEM exhaust and is real high quality. No cabin drone and they offer 3 sound versions. I have the loud version which I think is called the super sport. Link to their US website is as follows;
