Lucky old me; seems that being unable to fly does have some benefit after all.

I have to be in Stockholm on 14th June for business so I need to find a way to get there and back that doesn't involve trains; did that last year when I was a victim of the Icelandic volcanic ash panic and it took me 4 trains and 24 hours to get home (trains were clean, punctual and the views were great but don't want to do it again so soon).

Thinking of driving to Harwich, taking the ferry to Esbjerg and then driving the 600 odd miles to Stockholm, 2 questions:

1) anbody done this and, if so, any tips?
2) any alternatives to suggest?

Your post is very confusing in terms of reasoning - are you afraid of flying and trains? no matter.

I take the ferry to Esbjerg a couple of times a year with car and it is quite easy and stress-free. Remember to turn off your alarm etc when leaving your car on the car deck. Keep it under 160kph in Denmark and budget around 35gbp each way for the toll bridge between Cph and Malmo. As the ferry usually arrives at lunchtime in Esbjerg I guess you will stay over somewhere rather than drive the whole way through? I can recommend Nimb Hotel if you decide to stay in Cph.

In Stockholm I usually stay at Hotel Stureplan but on business I never have car with me so you may want to check out hotels with proper parking.

I am sure it will be an enjoyable trip although (or perhaps because) it will take a lot longer than flying biggrin

Thanks for the helpful advice; will help me a lot.

The reason I cannot fly at the moment is because I had a skiing accident in March and, amongst other injuries, ended up with a DVT (blood clot)....I am simply taking a bad situation and turning it to my advantage, in other words an excuse to drive the car in Denmark and Sweden.

Keith.

I drive to Denmark on a regular basis. I don't take Harwich-Esbjerg as it takes too long time and prefer to go the long way through France Benelux Germany and Denmark - via Roedby - Puttgarten ferry. It is a 14 hour trip to Copenhagen. Stockholm is another long drive from Copenhagen and going through Sweden can be tedious due to a lot of traffic cops but if you have time it is very scenic.
