I collected my DB12 today.

I first saw and sat in it nearly a month ago on the day it was delivered to the dealership, but due to various delays (people on holiday, software updates that dealership staff struggled with and had to get AM technical staff in for, various setups, ceramic coating, etc.), it was today that I finally took it home.

It's awesome.

I'm coming from a 2015 Jaguar F-Type R V8 5.0 RWD, and have never owned an Aston Martin. The Jag has been great – I'll miss its sound most of all. But that sound could get a bit much on long trips, hence my desire for something more GT this time around.

A while ago, with a budget in mind, I had settled on the DB11 as my car of choice. But when I finally got to sit inside a DB11, I was put off - I just couldn't bring myself to pay that price for that interior (it wasn't just the ancient MB infotainment, there were several things I did not like). I also considered the DBS – it was an improvement over the DB11 both inside and out, but it had many of the same interior issues, and for the age of car I wanted it was over my budget at the time. For both the DB11 and DBS, I also struggled to find a spec I liked (too many blacks, greys and silvers with black interiors).

When the DB12 was announced, I was hugely impressed. It's like the DB11 and DBS had a baby. It is probably the nicest looking car I have ever seen (I for one love the bigger front grille + wheels, and the bonnet seam doesn't bother me at all). The interior is a massive step up that finally matches the price tag. Pictures don't do it justice. It really is a work of art imo. After attending a launch event, I decided to go for it.

I'll admit I was a little disappointed at first about the lack of a V12. But honestly, for me, I think the V8 is the better choice anyway. I like the weight saving and the DB12's 'mid-front' engine position with 48/52 weight distribution. The performance-per-cylinder of the AMG V8 is very impressive. I also just really like the sound of a V8. Sure, the AM V12 had something the AMG V8 will never have - soul, maybe? But hey - can't have everything.

Today's weather didn't offer great first-drive conditions. But I did find a few stretches where I could have some fun, and wow, the drive is amazing. Very comfortable, with power always simmering in the background ready to be summoned - exactly what I wanted. Much quieter than my Jag was as well. Can't wait to get it out again.

I am happy to report that unlike other posts here, I did not have any breakdowns on the way home, the sat nav had my position perfectly accurate, and the screen did not get hot. I wonder is everyone on the same software version, or could a few of the earliest DB12 deliveries still be behind?

Speaking of the software, the new infotainment does still have a way to go. It's definitely not as polished as it should be. As an experienced software developer and UI designer, I can see all kinds of poor decisions in the UI, many with relatively straightforward fixes imo. But hey - it's just software. It will get better over time (for free!). It's definitely "good enough" for now, and I don't blame Aston Martin for getting the DB12 out the door now rather than delaying it further.

It's early days, but the only main issue I've had is that the large central back seat Bowers & Wilkins speaker grille cover is buzzing very loudly with the music. If I rest a hand on it, it stops. So something just needs tightened there.

Anyway, here are some pics. I went for Iridescent Emerald (which has to be seen in person), carbon roof/diffuser/skirting, ceramic brakes, carbon seats and Centennial Tan interior. Hell yes.

Beautiful.
Did you pick that up from AM Bristol?

I was in there the other day admiring it if so.

Thanks everyone.

I had the DB12 out a good bit today.

Some reports:

The carbon seats are great. They are probably not as squishy as regular seats but I didn't find them to be uncomfortable at all, even after a few total hours of driving. I really like them actually. The seat heating works totally fine. They don't have as many adjustment options as other seats, but the adjustments they do have is what I use 99% of the time anyway, so it's all good with me. When getting in and out, like others have said you do notice the seat side wall putting pressure on your hamstring, but it's not awful and easy to compensate against. I also really like that to move the seat forwards/backward you use this leather strap. Tactile-wise, it feels great, and it's so quick and handy (electrics don't make everything a better experience!):

While the infotainment screen is very nice quality and high resolution, unsurprisingly the not-fully-baked software can be painful to use. E.g. I wanted to know what track was playing on my phone via bluetooth (I didn't have the right cable for CarPlay) and all it was showing on screen was an empty list of folders. Turns out I had to swipe up from bottom of screen, which was not at all obvious. And less obvious still: if you swipe up just a little bit up from bottom then a mini player comes up, but if you swipe fully up, the whole screen changes into a big player. Again, not obvious, and until you understand it, confusing. You can swipe down from the top as well to reveal a list of icons, but tapping some of them does nothing. Lots of things like that. Oh well, like I said in initial post, it works to enough of a degree for now, but hopefully it gets better with updates. Here is my software version number:

Speaking of software, there is also a companion iPhone app which seems to be working well so far for the features it offers (and it shows my exact car spec as rendered in the configurator - pretty cool):

The folding mirrors are neat, but I can't but think that a well placed bird splat could have very annoying consequences...

Anyway, it sounds like I am complaining. Far from it. It was an absolute pleasure to drive, both when cruising and when pushing it. And everyone agrees it's a pleasure to look at as well:

As others have said, Atrossity, that’s a brilliant spec and lovely car. Congrats!

I am really liking the Emerald Green and tan interior combo.

Somehow, the DB12 looks like a replacement for the DBS in terms of level. The quality interior really helps and has been pointed out, the software will get better over time. (Does it update over the air?) But do wonder what the replacement DBS has to live up to. Will there be a new DBS after the updated Vantage, I wonder?

Enjoy like crazy!

Of all the photos and colours I’ve seen, that colour and spec does seem to bring out the very best in the DB12. I’m very happy you are loving your intro to AM ownership and very much enjoying your car!

I am delighted to see that buyers have moved on from the ubiquitous silvers and greys of the last few decades.

To be fair to SSO and Karenable I don't think I've ever seen him post about the AML product (he seems to be a overt McLaren/Ferrari/Maserati fanboy) and he declares he's never held AML shares but from what seems to be a well-informed standpoint he is highly critical of the finances and financial engineering of the AML company. And in that he's not alone.
You are right, I have never really posted anything about AML's products/cars other than including the last generation Vanquish in a list of great buys last year.

I have offered to do a test drive review but shockingly Aston wasn't interested.

yikes Don't pull that, it's an eject handle...

Is the back/forwards function also electric if you wish? (I haven't seen a DB12 yet).

You are quite honoured SSO. AML must be avid readers of your Aston Martin financial review blog.
Imagine being a 'fly on the wall', as Lawrence Stroll begins reading your blog, then blows his top. - smile

LS. - "This is not right. I cannot remember saying 'we don't need money'.
It might have been accurately reported in the news, but it is just I cannot remember saying it.
If they reported me saying it a few months later, after we got the £570 million in the bank, then I might remember it. - smile

Just got over the negative comments about silver cars...

Obviously the car is very fast, but what is not so obvious is how rewarding it is to drive. The steering is accurate and intuitive, the car holds its line really well. The brakes are beautifully weighted and have immediate feel, no excess travel in the pedal. The power and torque are just intoxicating. There's no torque steer, it's predictable and generates confidence even in adverse conditions. It may be very slightly down on power and performance compared to a DBS but it is more usable most of the time.

You can feel the size and weight of the car but that's the price of luxury and comfort. It's a brilliant combination of hand built luxury and dynamic performance.

When you see how far back the engine is positioned I can't imagine a V12 could be installed without compromising the front/rear weight balance.

There is plenty of room forward of the V8 to fit the V12's extra cylinders. Just like there was with the DB11/DBSS, the Vantage, and all the VH-gen cars. The V8s are certainly better balanced, but the V12s are also quite well-balanced. And the V12 is an Aston Martin engine.

About the one-post user who said his DB12 died at 68 miles, I'm assuming it's true. IMO, while that's obviously awful for him, if the problem is found and fixed in a reasonable period of time then, well, these things happen occasionally. If it isn't, then the car goes back. Maybe you try another one, maybe you're done. It's a newly-launched model, and there will be some that go wrong. As long as what happened to him remains very rare, then it shouldn't be blown out of proportion.

Shhh! Don't tell anyone: Aston slipped in a FWD platform this time around. They figured no one would notice, just like when BMW did it with their 1er.
