Any commments welcome!
I always check the oil after a run out, level surface etc etc, always tryin not to burn my hands, but i must admit the level is never very clear on the dipstick, it always seems to read about 1-2 cm above the max mark but im not sure if thats the actual level or just run off if you now what i mean.
Does anyone else have similar trouble.

Cheers

Nope.

All that you've said is right just make sure its idled for a little while before stopping the engine. If it is still showing over the max mark by 1-2cm it looks like it is overfilled. If it is overfilled speak to your dealer to check it can't cause any damage. However dry sumps I imagine will be okay if overfilled as the high oil level is in the reservoir not interferring with the crank etc as in a wet sump engine.

Strange coincidence - I was going to post exactly the same topic.

Noticed a few spots of oil under the car over the last week. Checked the levels a few times and mine too is over the max mark.

Could the two be connected? If its over-filled, could it be forcing its way out of a gasket? That's not a good thing I'm guessing?

I cant comment on oil level pre service, as the car had just been back to the factory for 6k service. I bought it the following week, read the manual and checked the oil level, which does seem a bit high

From new and after both services mine came back with the oil 2-3cms above the max mark. In fact before it went for the 12k service in the factory, I was running exactly on the max mark and the factory phoned me and said the oil level was low when they'd checked it pre-service.

Like all of you it gets checked after a run about a minute after I stop the engine.

Who's right? Anybody from the factory care to comment?

I accidentally overfilled mine rather substantially once. I found one of those basting type things from the kitchen (you know, where you suck up all the fat from round your sunday roast and squirt it over the top) was ideal for sucking out too much oil!

I'm sure this is probably not the factory recommended solution, however...

Checked my level tonight a few minutes after turning off - it seemed that the whole of the the dipstick was covered in oil.

Good news - presence of oil showed presumably that enough oil was present, bad news was it overfilled?

Considering the fact that oil hadn't been added to since it left the factory, conclusion can't be overfilled.

Manual says overfilling might lead to oil wastage as opposed to damage.

The fact that oil is new and not dirty may make it more difficult to see true level but it appears properly checking oil level it is a bit of black art. Will ask for guidance next week at first service
