Had a coolant leak yesterday, fairly substantial one resulting in temperatures on the wrong side of 100 again.

Got home, let the car cool down and checked the water. Topped it up a bit but strangely the level was not as low as the amount of leaked water would suggest.

My guess is I now have air in the system somewhere. Would running the engine with the cap off force the air out, or would this be a very silly thing to do? I don't mean driving, just let it tick over for a while...

Bloody car....

Its booked in to have a replacement radiator in a couple of days, just trying to get a temporary fix until then...at the moment i've left the damn thing in the garage....

There will be ableed valve (or maybe even two) somewhere.

Unfortunately Lotus Elises are my area of expertise..I just drive the Tamora!

I wouldn't let it idle with the cap off if you think you may have an airlock - it can interupt the flow and create hot spots. Airlocks usually depend upon the pipe routing and heights, so some cars *(early elises are the worst!) are very prone.
