T350T 400BHP - Insurance Tale
Discussion
Well here I am, expecting imminent delivery of said beast....
Phone Sunninghill - current insurer of my Cerb and for last 7 years 'need to speak to underwriter cos of the Performance pack' That was Monday - still no reply.
Today Phoned Tesco - Quoted after checking with their underwriter... £1.1K ish - cos other half has 6 points (sigh..)
Phoned Privilege - lowest quote (requires tracker +24 monitoring) and £600 XS £900. Pretty good for a car worth £46K.
Elephant - not on their system, but are checking with there underwriter. T350C is there but not the T nor the performance pack....
Anyone else have similar experiences...?

I wouldnt bother making a thing of it, they ask if its been modified (and it hasnt as it left the factory like that) they dont ask the horsepower, just the engine size!!
Its always a bit tricky when they ask if a car is standard as all TVR's are different, not to mention Porsche, BMW or MB option lists.
When exactly is a car termed 'modified' as opposed to standard??
Bennno
I agree with Benno - let's face it they aren't going to dyno the car for the sake of £100 in premiums, are they. As long as you suply them with the correct details of yourself and the car, it's up to them. "Factory fitted sports exhaust, brakes and engine modifications as per red Rose pack" should suffice. If the underwiter can't be bothered to find out what the Red Rose pack is, then it's their problem, not yours. Your duty is to inform the insurers of the car and any modification, not work out the premium.
(I know it isn't strictly speaking the Red Rose pack, but if you put that, you're giving it a label that can be ascertained from TVR as a performance upgrade fitted as an official factory modification).

Tried to get a quote from Elephant for a flaming Chimaera 4.0HC the other day - "its not on the system" they said. I then explained that I used to be insured with them previously and it was the correct car before - "ah, yes, we add and remove cars from the list frequently" they say. "you might have insured it previously but not this year. Sorry sir. Have you tried Norwich Union".... gits...

Serious question - Why isn't the car called a T400C?
The old Tuscan R is called T400R and T440R to differentiate so why aren't they called T350C/T and T400C/T?
For all I know it could be badged as a T400T - haven't seen the damn thing yet....
It's ready now/will be next week
It's due for delivery this week/next week
Delete where appropriate.....

Much as I'd like to save myself some hassle, I've come across and in fact dealt with some horror stories where drivers think they're insured and in fact are not..because of some unseen/undisclosed clause that their insurance company decides to apply after a claim:
'you didn't inform us that the car had a body kit' - applied to a car with a standard factory fitted body kit.
'Your cover is not valid as you changed the tyres from the standard size and we believe this is a factor in your accident'
So for the sake of some initial hassle and a bit more premium I'll disclose up front - besides I have to be honest and set an example ...don't I...

Nubbin - good call. This may have done the trick with Sunninghill...update as soon as I know.

Mine cost me £626 with unlimited (no cost)track day use, plus I am under 29, and have 3 points on my licence!
Sunningdale suprised me!!!
Another good bet is A Plan Insurance brokers in Beaconsfield whom did my M3 to include work use and three drivers for £520....

Elephant quoted me £718 for the T350C, but would NOT insure the T350T ? Why ? It is practically the same car. What a way to lose £718 quid deal boys.
The Association of Brittish Insurers (ABI) allocates a vehicle code and grouping to new vehicles. Until this is done software houses do not add it to their systems and insurers can not rate them. In my experience TVR's tend to take a little time to filter through the system. This is probably why they are not quoting, simply that they do not have it on their list!

Andy,
that doesn't explain why the Direct Line / Privilege / Tesco companies CAN provide quotes.

I was only offering a possible explanation.
Seeing that Driect Line, Privalege & Tesco are all owned by the same company (Royal Bank of Scotland I think) they obvioulsy share the same software house, perhaps their system had been updated quicker than Elephant's? Just thinking out loud......

Andy, appreciate it's a plausible explanation, but I've now been hanging on since the date of this post for someone in your office to come back to me with a resolution. Direct Line/Tesco/Privilege had to speak to their underwriter - done whilst I was still on the phone - because the car was not listed within their software, but then were able to quote immediately after that...
Royal Sun Alliance seem to have a problem, which to my disbenefit has not yet been resolved.
