re:factory closing down for two weeks next month.

Just interested to know why TVR dont stagger their breaks.
Im not having a go,just thought if they staggered holiday leave they could keep up with production better?

Factory shutdowns were traditionally in industries where production had to stop in order to carry out essential maintenance, eg to cool furnaces down for repairs, or pipework feeding heat exchangers etc.

Not convinced the TVR factory comes in to this category but then it's a business, it's their bat and they can do what they like. Not really the way most modern businesses do it, but then it turns out a product that's out of the ordinary too doesn't it?

Feeling very mellow, but then I'm not unable to sleep with excitement, waiting on delivery of my new car from TVR, am I?

Might have something to do with a small workforce running a "prodution line" far more efficient to close for two weeks than have essential people on hols at inconvenient times

Err No! but nearly all the automotive manufacturing industries do. I know cos I'm in the trade. Infact most of the European factories close down for August!

Thanks for that answer craig,i'll get in touch when I need a hand with the Sun's crossword

As im not in the trade I don't know if this is standard in the Automotive industry.

Im all for as much hols as poss in the summer, just thought it seems strange from a business point of view to shut down for two weeks.

Rudegirl,what car you getting?

Wouldnt it be better for the customer to know they could get parts/engine or whatever if needed?

From a staff point of view that must be a pain in the butt knowing you had that little flexability when booking your hols?

The traditional summer break is so that the production schedulers can plan around it by taking a huge uncertainty out of the equation. Their job of getting cars out the door would be nigh-on impossible if key line workers could take time off at any point. It is also a useful time for the manufacturing engineers to retool for new products, install new machines, or re-organise the factory layout.

Oops, I was a bit squiffy last night. I'm not getting a new car. I was trying to say that if I was waiting on delivery of a new car, I might be a bit more bothered that production was going to pause for a fortnight.

I thought that they did need a break in the body mould section to rip the floor up and re-do it every now and then. Without it the resin drips and fibre dust would just build up to an unmanaged level - that's what I was told anyway...

It makes sense - at least your workforce planning can be a lot more predictable.

But it's historical, really.

We don't.

All though we do get rostered hols through out the year, we get just TWO days we can put in when we want.
We also have to work on all Bank hols with the exception of the two Xmas and New Years day.

Up here in the North it was always the case that each town had two weeks holiday where all the businesses shut down and everyone had their holidays. Each town had a different two weeks. A few company’s keep up the tradition, TVR included.
