I've spent two weeks driving around with the gears grating between 4th and 5th. Today I drive the car to TMS, grating all the way. Whilst drinking coffee the serive manager approaches and asks for a demonstration of the problem ... "it does it all the time, just like this" I said as the bloody thing changed from 4th to 5th without even a whisper. After much attempted demonstrating it finally gave a small grate as if in protest.

TMS are figurring it out as I type.

Ahhhh, the much documented
"itonlydoesitwheniamaloneinthecarandcuresitselfinamiraculousfashionassoonasthemechanicgetswithin20feetofthevehicle" type of fault!
Don't you just hate that!!! and you just know that as you drive away the mechanic thinks you are some sort of oversensitive nutcase, and the fault WILL return once you get half a mile down the road.

Sounds to me like it may be something related to uneven weight distribution, say the gear lever may be catching on some bodywork, and when somebody is in the passenger side the lever does not catch it.

The fault's been diagnosed by John in Blackpool, he's the gearbox putter togetherer, apparantly. It's a plate and spring affair that sorts the synchro to 5th and he's seen it before where the plate bends. A simple fix, should be completed in a couple of days. Never a dull, nor normal moment with TVR. I wonder what will bend, fall off, leak, flap about, mist up or generally malfunction next. Never mind, when it's going it does rather compensate for the problems and the summer will soon be here ... or not, as the case may be.
