Chasis Protection
Discussion
Having owned an older Chimaera with an aged chasis and worried about Waxoyl and Hammerite, is this something worth considering on a new car or should it be okay for the first few years?
I had my Tamora chassis Waxoyled when it went back in for the 1000 mile service. TMS charged £100 incl VAT, which seemed pretty reasonable.
I spent quite a bit of time inspecting the chassis treatments at the factory when i went up there in january. All the chassis now are shot blasted prior to treatment thus giving the powder coat (that has been improved apparantly!) something to stick to. This was one of my concerns after seeing the powder coat fall off my 98 cerb and turning to rusty metal!

If I had a new TVR I would paint the chassis and suspension wishbones, etc. with Tectyl 506 - it's an almost clear liquid that dries hard and requires several very hot steam pressure washes to remove.
Can be power washed to remove road dirt each year without harm. I was told it was originally developed for MoD to put new military machines in 'mothballs' until needed. Most of the cars I have restored were treated this way and over fifteen years later it's still intact. Beauty is you can see the original finish underneath the Tectyl 506. Comes in 5 litre cans and an aerosol for touching in inaccessible damaged areas.

Over here I get it from a firm called International Lubricants Ltd outside Moira who stock mainly Valvoline products - it's reasonably priced approx £20 per five litres and about £5 for an aerosol. There's a complete range of Tectyl products for closed as well as open sections of bodywork/chassis. Look up your Yellow pages under Lubrication - MMMMh!
