I have a test drive booked in a Tamora tomorrow and I was wondering whether you would recommend this car for every day use (a frequent question I would imagine).

I used to have an Elise 111s, but it was a second car and only used when I could be bothered, but this will have to be my main form of transport.

I have a 330CI sport at the mo and was also considering a Boxster S.

I realise that there is likely to be some biased opinion, but nothing wrong with that.

Thanks

Chris

Nothing biased at all - you get good sound advice on PH.

Why don't you buy it, lend it to me, and in two years time I'll let you know if it is as good an everyday car as my Griff?

See problem solved!

scat, I use my Tamora every day for my 4 mile trip to work!
I've done 10,500 miles in the last year and have loved it.
So the answer to your question is YES. Unless of course you'll be doing very high mileage so the 6000 mile service intervals may put you off?
Go for it.
Cheers.... Andrew

I only do about 12000 a year.

How much is a service?

I got really fed up with the Elise cos I always seemed to be at the dealer having something sorted.

I am reluctant to invite the same problems with the next car, but have had at least my fair share of dealer visits with the BM - really crap build quality! Is the Tamora better than TVR reputation would have me believe. (I have never owned one before)

Are you buying new?
First service is 1000 miles and is either free or up to £100.
Then it's 6000, 12000, 18000, etc. My 6000 service was approx £600 but different dealers have slightly different labout rates.
I've had no major problems but have had a few niggles that have needed the dealer's attention. These were mainly things that my dealer should have sorted first time round at the 1000 mile service.
Are you far from your dealer? Could piss you off if you've got a long journey to fix something small!
Email me if you need to know any specifics?
Cheers.... Andrew

Personally I don't think a Tamora is an everyday car. The variance in build quality and number of problems is far to great IMHO. Andrew for instance has had far less issues than me. Its pot luck to a certain degree but that is why I don't think they are everyday cars. If you want an everyday performance car buy a Boxter. You only need to look at the mileage on used vehicles to see that a good percentage of Porsche's are used on a daily basis.

I think the only reasons that you couldn't consider it an everyday car would be reliability, practicality and cost.

Only you know whether it's for you. But for what it's worth:

Reliable: Plenty of people run TVRs every day - a new one is going to be at least as reliable and you have warranties to rely upon (I don't)

Practical: Do you play golf? Do you need to move kitchen sinks every day? Can you get it into parking spaces without tearing all the tendons in your arms? Will it keep you dry in Britain's glorious summer? Will it do all these when you need it to? What compromises might you make? (I park at the far end of the supermarket car parks - away from trolleys)

Cost: If you were worried about cost you wouldn't be looking further than a Micro, would you? (I don't think about it too hard, even though I bother to record the details - it's all relative anyway)

So - on balance, what do you reckon?

I'm fortunate enought to own a 330CI Sport and a Tamora, so you wont get any bias here. The bimmer is light years ahead as an everyday car but the Tamora is light years ahead as a fun weekend blast, it's really that simple. I love them both for totally different reasons....

The 330 is fun up to a point - as far as a 4 seat sport practical coupe it is unbeatable. All of the comforts i could need (heated seats...ahhhh) but quite capable of serious speed and handles OK.

The only problem is that i am bored of it and want something a bit more exciting. I know the Porsche is the sensible option, but I am not sure it is fast enough or fun enough.

I should also tell you that I am under some pressure to sell my bike (had an accident and my wife wants it gone - she said she would like to celebrate my 30th birthday with me with all of my limbs!)
I need something that is going to go some way to being a decent altenative to the bike whilst giving me some practicality in terms of getting to work etc.

We have a Merc A for any journeys that involve more people or space.

you're dead right about the 330, especially those seats.
Coming from the bimmer you'll find the boxster far too similar as a drive, ie boring. If you really want something exhiliarating on 4 wheels not 2 then the Tamora is a no-brainer...trust me!!

scat1, where are you in the West Mids? I'm in Leamington so could show you around my Tamora if it'll help?

Scat1, I had exactly the same dilemma. I was looking for an everyday sports car and the BoxterS was top of the list followed by an M3 cab.

Then I went to the motor show and saw the Tamora and fell in love. I didn't get to the other stands and didn't want to I was smitten.

I do very high mileage with my job and I knew that a TVR would not be up to 40K a year so I came up with a compromise. Buy a Tamora and an old diesel smoker. Use the diesel for everyday use, save some money on the fuel and then....when its dry.....take out the Tamora and play.

just do it because after all who even notices a Boxter these days but your Tamora will draw crowds.

P.S. you have to have 18” wheels and full leather.

Thanks for the offer ALt. I think I have answered my questions however.

I had my test drive in the Tamora and it was an amazing car - even though I couldnt get above 30mph most of the time due to traffic. The engine sound was amazing and handling seemed very civilised even in the wet. I dont think that I would be able to live with it as my everyday car though. It was VV noisy and had no creature comforts (I know it is not that sort of car). The dashboard was just lovely though.

If I could have it as a second/weekend car then I would have signed up Saturday, but realistically, I think that I would get fed up after a while.

I drove the Boxster S after, and that was amazing for different reasons - much easier to drive quickly, but no way near as involving. It did have a glass rear screen (couldnt see anything out of the back of the Tamora) and I found it a bit more comfy.

I did get back in to my 330 and think that it was very similar to the Boxster, if not quite as quick or nimble.

So I think I will wait a bit and maybe try a couple of other things before spending my hard earned cash!

Thanks for all your help
