Apologies if this is a dumb question, but my Tamora is only 7 days old and has done about 300 miles and is low on oil already! I was driving along and the engine 'coughed' and the oil pressure warning light came on. Checked the oil - and it needs a top up. Is this normal? I thought they were not supposed to use much oil in the first 1000 miles when they are running on the thick gloopy stuff. Has this happened to anyone else?

Mine didn't use any in the first 1,000 miles, and at now approx 4,500 miles, has used very little since the first service.
A call to the dealer i think.
Mind you, I get a different reading everytime i check the oil. It states in the handbook to check it immediately after turning the engine off. When i ask the mechanic at the dealers (Castles) he said leave it for a couple of minutes then take a reading.
Hope all is Ok

That doesn't sound right. A new engine is not going to be down on oil if the level was right in the first place - well not in 300 miles. Dealer call seconded!

There are plenty of posts about trying to read the level on the SP6 engine. I gather that the concensus is to read it after a few minutes.

Bit naughty of me to say this, but:
I wouldn't mention this to your dealer. Just let them know it's used a lot of oil. you might want to think about deleting this thread as well..........
I can see it now
Tam girl "My engine coughed & the oil pressure warning came on"
TVR "when did you last check the oil level?"
Tam Girl "err...."
TVR "warranty void!"

Hey Leadfoot - I only collected the car on Saturday! Oil check weekly I was told so hadn't come up to the weekly check. Spoke to the dealer - they have told me to top it up with good qaulity mineral oil - don't seem to be able to get the Mobil 10/W30 they recommend in the manual so have to use 15/W40. I am going to take it into the dealer tomorrow morning so they can have a quick look at it.

IF the engine coughing was it stalling then the oil pressure light comming on could just have been caused by that, and not the low oil level... so maybe not all is lost, but still id get it to a dealer to check alls ok, and whilst your there get them to show you how to check the oil... that way if there is ever a problem, you've always checked it exactly as shown...

Fair do's. They couldn't complain at that (could they?)

Not Tamora, but still on this topic:
Honda have (allegedly) been refusing engine waranty claims caused by low oil level. Their get out clause is that the handbook states that the oil level should be checked each time the car is refueled
If one manufacturer gets away with it the rest will follow.

No - only coughed once but did not stall. Fortunately I was on my road so only had to drive it a few yards to get it into the garage. Oil now topped up but still not happy - idling at about 700 and white smoke/steam coming out of it. Going to call the dealer to recover it as think driving it is not safe/ will cause more damage.

Did you follow the handbook guidance for checking the oil? i.e. check the level immediately after turning the engine off? (Unlike non-dry sump cars where you would always check the oil level quite a while after turning the engine of, to allow the oil to drain back to the sump).

If not then its possible you may have overfilled with oil. Although it doesn't explain the oil light coming on!

Hi Griff2be

Yes - handbook followed correctly. I checked the oil as soon as I turned the engine off.

Fingers crossed its just something simple then.

Recovery sounds to be the way to go.

Thanks. TVR AA have been out and confirmed it is a tow job back to the dealer (although they are not too sure what the problem is). Totally gutted! It's less than a week old - hope they can fix it quickly! Anyone any idea how long such things normally take? Suppose it depends on the final diagnosis.

As you say, time will depend on whats wrong. Hose or clip come off - no time at all. Engine knackered - several weeks.

I'd be on the phone to the dealer suggesting they provide you with a TVR loan car whilst its sorted. You don't pay the thick end of £40k to run around in a Vauxhall or whatever.

Good luck

Fear not, things like this on brand new deliveries get sorted before anything else.

It should be back in your expectant hands within 24 hours if its nothing too serious.

Matt.

Hope it is 24 hours! I am with the TVR Centre in Barnet and they do not hand out loan cars - have to pay for the hire (although they do not make a profit, they hire a car in and pass on the cost to customers).

Nonsense! Don't take any shit like that, if you just bought a brand new car and it fails then teh dealer is obliged to provide a loan car! Would look pretty bad on here if they didn't eh Rich...

Kings don't do loan cars either (well not TVRs anyway). But I went home in a Tamora demonstrator when there was a problem of their making when I went to collect my Griff.

Just tell them you insist on a TVR loan car whilst yours is sorted out. After all, you paid all that money to drive a TVR. Its the dealer's problem how he sorts it out!

It's official - my Tamora is off to Blackpool. The dealer is not sure what is wrong with her, except that something is very wrong. They are organising a loan car tomorrow for me. Hopefully won't be long - apparently they put new cars as top priority.
