Does anyone know the noise level produced by a 4L engine in a factory Red Rose T350 with the large bore exhaust?
Considering a track day at Brands Hatch and the limit is 105dB static.

thanks

Was there even a factory big bore option? And TVR just fitted what they had lying around, or what supplier hadn't put the account on "stop" to standard cars, so it could be anything, and unless you are the original owner, what have the previous owners done.

The easiest and cheapest method of finding out is to download a free decibel meter app for your phone. That uses your phone's microphone and will give you a fair idea. Or buy a noise meter on Amazon. They are about £20. Rev it to about 4K, hold the phone at a 45 degree angle and half a meter from the exhaust, and half a meter to a meter from the ground and see where you get to.

The likelihood is that it will fail unless it is totally standard.

You can go along to Brands (or any other track that is nearer you) on another trackday and get you car tested with the other guys that day. While not transferable to the day you are doing, at least you will have an ideal as to where you car is and can preemt some actions.

As for 'sports' exhaust. Was it not the factory claim that the S versions had a bigger bore exhaust?

The factory claimed a lot of things. Delivering them was a totally different matter!

The build sheet says "uprated engine and exhaust" and other Red Rose related things, and Sussex TVR have confirmed it's not a "standard" pipe or rear box, so it is a real thing that TVR did, to this car at least.
I have a class 2 sound level meter on order for another purpose so can measure it myself but was interested in getting a reality check as well!
What sound level does a standard T350 produce?

I'm told by those that know... that the majority of T350 Red Rose Engines were fitted under rebuild warranty claims by those threating legal action against TVR as a sweetener smile .
The existence of a "Build Sheet" is interesting , the only documentation on an order i've seen is the "Customer spec Sheet" which covers trim and standard orderable options.

But the track record of those engines was just as bad as all the others, so won't it have blown up since, and been rebuilt, properly, elsewhere by now to whatever spec the owner at the time wanted/was offered/could afford?

The track day is at Brands Hatch - Fri 2nd December 2022, mottrackdays.com.

The build sheet I have may be the specification sheet you refer to. The title is "TVR Specification Sheet" and it has 3 sections, Colour and Trim, Optional Extras and Special Notes. At the bottom is says "Build sheet printed at.....", so TVR also referred to it as a build sheet.

Under Optional Extras I have "Red Rose Package" and under Special Notes I have "Vinylester body, "S" brakes, uprated engine and exhaust".

The car also has a Hydratrac diff, although not mentioned on the build/ specification sheet.

The engine has indeed been rebuilt, by str8six, although I have no reason to suppose it was to anything other than original specification.

As far as I can tell the car is as it left the factory and it conforms to my understanding of the "Red Rose Package".

Anyway, we digress, anyone know how loud a standard T350 is? smile

Not sure you are going to get a useful answer as the idea of a standard 4.0l Red Rose noise level is going to vary as much as the cars. As they age the noise changes, as the cats deteriorate the noise changes and not all things are created equal in the first place. Especially at TVR.
I bought a Red Rose T350 and also had most of what you said on my sheet (but I didn't spec the Hydratrack or lightweight body - saved the weight by not having air con). It did have whatever 'upgrades' to engine and exhaust and the brakes were definitely better. I have used it over many years at dozens of trackdays and has been close to 105 but never failed. BUT the same car at the same track doesn't always get the same number. Apparently weather, humidity, wind direction, 'atmospherics', fairy dust, whatever, all have an impact......
I initially failed at one track and the guy testing suggested have a 15 minute blat around the local lanes to 'warm everything up'. I did this and it passed. Not sure of the science but it seemed a nice warm engine and exhaust did better on the noise test.....

@shorts! That is really useful, thanks. Sounds like I should get over to a Goodwood track day and get mine measured as a starting point. A good excuse for a run over there. This will be my first track day (if I go), so any advice on prepping the car?

Advice would be to do a track day in the summer. Its a crap experience in the wet, and brands hatch is fairly unforgiving when it’s slippery due to the inclines/declines, camber etc. especially in something with patchy handling. Obviously if you’re Schumacher ignore.

That sounds like good advice indeed. Maybe I'll go as a spectator, get the car sound level checked and watch my friend slide about in his car.

Shame you missed out on the TVRCC trackday at Cadwell on the 21st of this month. That would have been a good first trackday to start with.

Why are you waiting until December?

https://www.javelintrackdays.co.uk/trackdays/Sep

Snetterton is a good track to start at.

As is Bedford, plus a Brands Indy;

Post up a day you want to do and the regulars may follow ..

I own a Red Rose T350 too.

Everything was checked :
4.0 L
Big Bore exhaust (i know it cause i bought a normal back box and the diameter is smaller ; the act back bow was really really too loud !)
S Brakes front
Vinylester body
Hydratrack too

As we have to register these cars in France, the company who made it for me told me that the car was lighter than the standard one (1118 kg measured with full tank), and much more faster than a standard T350 (even maybe faster than a standard Sagaris that they register by two times here).

Hope it helps !

Nice car! Has it been sound level checked for a circuit? smile

The trouble with living in Sussex is that we are very limited on tracks within a reasonable distance. It's Goodwood or Brands really. I need to get the car noise tested before booking anything. I'll get over to Goodwood when they have another track day and get the car measured.

Join the French club and you will have access at least once a year to Lohéac track with no restrictions (no sound check neither).
And from time to time we are going on other tracks which are nice with us (Lurcy Levis, Auxois, Issoire...).
