I have only just noticed on my T350 that the air intake for the engine is located under the floor pan. This seems to me that the air is dirty, and at a low pressure causing less air than there should be feeding the engine. Has anyone here been informed why air is drawn in at this point and not at the front of the car at high level away from any heat source?

That has puzzled me before. I'd have thought that the air passing over it at right angles would have caused a sort of chimney effect if you know what I mean and draw air from the intake, but, what do I know. Would like to know the thinking behind it though.

It's not a LOW air pressure position, so works just as well as a route to the front, but with the packaging advantages of not having to find space for a long induction pipe and large collector at the front.

The heat question is a good point - thankfully it actually works in our favour in this case; at low speed heat rises around the side of the engine and therefore has to draw cold air in towards the bottom of the engine, where the air intake is located. At higher speeds it isn't an issue.

Racing research has proven that front-mounted ram effects are actually negligible, even at high speed - see threads elsewhere.

Mmmm, no doubt deep floods best avoided, unless we try planing across at high speed (your normal approach.....)

Perhaps it's easily to turn the air intake through 180 degrees and have it pointing out the top of the bonnet Landrover stylee

It would have to be quite deep water, probably 8 inches or more, but I’d say it maybe possible having had a look under several cars.

A mechanic I spoke to did report finding polythene bags and other debris had been sucked it. Some people have had gauze fitted across the intake entrance to prevent this.
