There are lots of threads on the Tuscan S6 forum about engines that have had one, two or even three rebuilds . What are the experiences of the T350/Tamora contingent, are you getting problems or have Tuscan owners paved the way for a more reliable S6 engine?

Nobody really knows to be honest. They seem much better than the earlier engines. TVR seem to have smoothed the engine out a lot too. Also, remember, a 2003 Tamora/T350 is no different to a 2003 Tuscan engine.

Have a search on this section of the forum and see how many engines have had major problems. I don't recall any, I'll leave others to comment too ...

There is a T350 for sale in the classifieds at the moment which states it has had a recent rebuild - not sure of the reason? (Might have been to upgrade to RR spec looking at the ad wording).

I think it really depends on how the engine is treated.
I've been driving mine daily for three years (24,000 miles) with no engine rebuild......

I agree and good to hear that.. is that the highest Tamora/350 out there with no engine rebuild?? Can anyone beat it..

Also I think Hilti had an engine problem recently but not seen any update...

26,000 miles in a 3.6L Tuscan - exactly the same engine.

Most certainly helps, let's not get into a heating discussion here, but some go bang when treated gently.

My theory is gently gently catchy monkey when it's cold, warming up extra carefully. Then once it's warmed up make sure you give it a thorough revving a few times. I'm guessing short journeys are not good for this engine.

T/. (whose engine will now go bang )

Chaps,

Logged on at home so under Ginner not Hilti.

Thought i'd update you on the engine noise.

Was in dealer for a week. they checked tappets etc, and liased with factory, engine runs fine, but still tapping noise, so factory asked to see car.

It was sent to factory last thursday, had a call today to say that they are in process of taking engine out and it will be completely stripped down to bare block for inspection, anything that needs replacing will be, will take 3 weeks.

Thing that is p***ing me off is that its only done 9k miles, i religiously changed the oil, always warmed her up and being a Mechanical engineer am sympathetic to the way i treat the engine and rest of car for that matter, (think the word is mollycoddled). The only thing i can think of is that, as it was an ex demonstrator with 2.5k on when i bought it, either it wasn't run in properly or it's been ragged from cold repeatedly? not the way to treat a virgin!

Will keep you all posted as to the cause of problem.

Hilti.

Many tales suggest that ex-demo's can be unusually risky, particularly with a highly tuned engine like SP6. How many test drivers are really forced to warm up thoroughly before extending it a bit? But still worth it with a full engine warranty I guess.

Mine has just gone pop at 12,600 miles, but rather than the usual "finger followers" type of problem, it was the drive chain for the scavenge pump that decided to break on Tuesday night, so oil supply stopped, and engine went up in a cloud of smoke

Luckily for me, Dream Machines invested some time ago in keeping a "spare" SP6 engine for these occasions, so that rather than the usual 3 month wait for TVR to rebuild the engine, they can slot in one they have already prepared

In the meantime mine goes off for rebuild, and will (after some time) be sitting there waiting for the next SP6 victim.

Alex sorry to hear that - good that DM can put another engine in. Will have to remember that given mine was from DM.. hopefully you will be back up and running soon. Did they mention if they had seen the problem before?

Apparently they have seen it before, but it's fairly unusual.

Should hopefully have the car back by next weekend, and the replacement engine is a 4 litre

I will then have to run it in - never had to do that before!

Wow sorry to hear this. I can modify your register entry if you want for the 4l bit!

see this if you want to know about a tes of reliability!

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=151413&f=23&h=0

I have been using mine till i sold it (new one on the way) daily, I did around 14k miles in 5 months, the only problem i had was some stupid sensor problems, appart from that nothing.

As long as you take the time to warm it up, check oil, and use it regularly, you should not have any problem. I had 3 SP6 engined cars, and zero engine probs.

Have to wait for TVR to say exactly how much it will cost, but Dream Machines are hopeful that it will come within my warranty cover, fingers crossed!
