Hello guys
Im back with another question. Can I get an opinion on my starting up noises. Im probably a bit paranoid but just want to try and get a feeling for what is normal.
I have a .wav of my startup. Would somebody have a quick listen and let me know if it sounds ok. The only thing that sounds a bit odd to me is I think the fuel pump. It primes as expected after you switch off the immobiliser. Then after youve started the car it seems to change tone when I move the steering wheel!!

What a weird sound. So you're starting the engine and turning the steering wheel left and right a bit? Does the noise definitely come from the LH rear of the car or the engine bay?
Does it do it when the car is moving?
Could be some kind of sticky relay, but the sound does not sound right for that. Another good one for the dealer I think.

Trefor - This is what Im doing (Im recording from right infront of the steering wheel, basically drivers position). Sounds coming from behind instrument panel.
Turn key to fire up instrument panel -
sounds of panel initialisation and then panel fan
Press keyfob to deactivate immobiliser -
(fuel pump??) heard priming
Turn key to start engine -
(fuel pump??) heard running
Turn steering wheel a little left and right a few times -
wawawawawawawa changing pitch type noise (this i think is the wierd noise)
Turn off (then on again, but ignore that)
You can hear it when driving but drowned out by S6 wail
Any ideas ??

So it's coming from behind the dash. You say the only thing you're doing to cause the noise is turn the steering wheel and since the power steering is electrically powered I'd suggest something wrong with the relays/control panel for the steering. If you kneel down and look up under the steering column when you do this you will see the relays/various control boxes for the electrics. Something among that lot must be making the noise ...
On your car - when you disengage the immobiliser, can you here the fuel pump prime? Does it sounds like mine at all (about 8 seconds into recording)?
This strange noise (about 14 seconds in) is the same one you hear after you disengage the immobiliser (I assume this is fuel pump??) and the tone changes as I move the wheel.
Just listened again - its the sound that changes tone that im worried about, not the 'sawing' sound, thats just the steering wheel

I haven't heard the .wav file but it sounds like the noise mine makes. If so, it is the power steering pump. My car went in to the dealers for another problem and came back with a really exagerated noise. Luckily I noticed it on start up when leaving the dealership and so they took it into the workshop and adjusted something (belt, location, other?) and reduced the noise immediately to a barely perceptible whine that cannot be deteced once on the move.

Graham - how about a FAQ for your register site?
I found that alot of my questions come from not knowing what is normal for a T350 / Tamora. We could have as much good info as we can get, maybe with pics and sound files etc to aid DIY, diagnosis and as back up for when dealer tells you its normal but you know no one else on PH has experienced it.
I would be up for contributing as much as im able.

The steering is electrically assisted. The power drain on what ever it is making the noise caused by the use of the steering could well change the note of the noise. I have a constant noise post fuel pump but have not tried the steering as I back it straight iout of the garage.

This was mentioned before and I thought it was an excellent idea... but nothing came in.
I'd be very happy to have a FAQ and technical section on the register - over to you guys.
Just to clarify folks, the power steering is electro-hydraulically assisted, meaning that there's an electric motor driving a hydraulic pump. The noise sounds fairly typical for this arrangement, but if it's more audible than normal, it may just be that one of the hoses is routed incorrectly and forming a noise path from the rubber mounted pump to the chassis, and thus transmitting it to you. Alternatively the pump may be running low on fluid. Either way, I'd suggest a trip to your dealer might be in order. Sorry!

Yours sounds fine to me, up to the point where the engine is running and you turn the wheel and get that funny noise. Can't record mine at the moment, I'm in the US.
New info... The noise changes pitch when a load is put on the electrical systems, not just when you move the wheel. So, closing the window etc changes the pitch.

Sorted!! This was the trick. The power steering pump was the culprit, whining away. Basically took some time to isolate all the hoses that touched chassis and the pump itself with some self adhesive high density foam pads I had. You can still just hear it but its sooooo much quieter and no longer annoying.
