Hi, just wondering what the general consensus is? Have most people gone for the close ratio box? Don’t understand why it is not standard as on the Tuscan S

I’m in the same situation as you. I really can’t decide if the close ratio box is necessary and have specified my car without it at the moment. It’s totally crazy that full leather is standard and a close ratio box isn’t, especially considering that the Sagaris is supposed to be a very performance focused car.

Some people have told me the close ratio box is only really necessary for track use. I don’t have much intention of driving it on a track, but surely you would benefit on the road as well? I’m going to have a go in a Tuscan S and see what that’s like.

To keep it below the magic 50k mark?

The thing I don't understand is that if the close-ratio gearbox makes any difference to performance then surely the 0-60 speed would change accordingly? It'd be like, 0-60 in 3.6s with normal gearbox and 3.4s with close-ratio. So, if it doesn't make any difference to performance then why bother with it?

In the Tuscan Challenge the close ratio box suits some circuits and the wider/standard ratio box others. Some drivers carry both and change them according to the circuit.

For a Sagaris on the road or for track days I don't think it will make the slightest difference to you. Unless one box suits the engine characteristics better than the other - but again, you are pretty much on the margin. Save your money and spend it on driver instruction instead.

I ordered my Sagaris without the close ratio box. However the factory have loaned me a Tuscan S which does have the close ratio box.

Guess what.....

I have changed my order and added a close ratio box, Why? because it has a long first gear so 0-60 is now possible in 1st gear so hence a lower 0-60 time (no gear change)and the car pulls so much quicker after a gear change (as you would expect it to).

I shall be entering the TVRCC speed championship in 2005 and this gearbox will certainly help, although as suggested driver instruction will probably work better.

The close box has a higher first which will make it more of a pain in town but even more of a weapon at the lights when you're heading out of town. I drove a tuscan s with a close ratio box and I prefered it, felt a bit more like a racer, needing more clutch and revs to get it going.

The close box is rumoured to be stronger too so I'm having one on my sagaris. And this I'm sure is pure BS but one mechanic told me the close ratio box lets the car go hit the magic 200 mark in a tuscan at least. Again I'm sure that's pure horse crap but I liked the sound of it anyway.
