I've had a shocker.

Taking the T350 for a journey from Birmingham to Southampton (the obligatory visit to the relatives) and on the return leg, bugger me, joining the M3 from the slip road, a bloody great gritter sprays me, at 70mph, with half a tonne of flying rocks.

Dred to think the damage to the paintwork - it wasn't even that effing cold. Too dark to look now but first thing I shall be excavating the car.

Gutted.

Gritters are a damn nightmare this time of year, I'm pretty sure some make sure we get 'sprayed' deliberately,, as I'm sure they're not meant to grit whilst other cars are near the griiter!, However, the 'Sun Reader' Gritter drivers love it, don't they!

About eight years ago I got caught in my Griffith by a gritter coming the opposite direction near my home in Warwickshire in a narrow road. I knew straight away there was going to be some substantial damage so I swung round, got after him and got close enough to him when he pulled up at a junction to get his number.

I then wrote to the appropriate authority which handled the gritting after phoning to find out with all details, time, place, licence plate, road, direction etc, they insisted on photographs, requesting compensation and making it clear I would pursue it further if necessary. As suspected the front of the car was a right state. Anyway my letter was passed onto the contractor and after a few letters their insurance paid up. I think it was about £2500 for a complete front repair job, which took care of a few 'extras' at the same time to compensate me for the inconvenience as well, as you do. They made some excuse about it being on the wrong setting to do with the spread.

Whenever I see one at this time of year coming the opposite direction I try and get out of the way if I can.

However I have noticed in recent times that the 'spread' is nothing like as wide as it used to be, they used to shoot it out sideways very fast. Now the spread is narrower and the grit much smaller grade. Perhaps the insurance companies got fed up with paying out.
