Drove the Tamora into work yesterday. It was freezing on start up, so I let it run on the drive (blocked in) for about 15 minutes.

On the way into work (centre of Manchester - standing traffic for most of the way) the water temp was as normal but the oil temp was up around the 75 - 80 mark. The smell inside the cockpit was a bit hot too (although I did have the heater on full whack).

Does this sound a bit warm? Considering it was pretty cold outside, I don't recall seeing the oil temp that high before..?

Advice, as ever, appreciated...

seconded, when I drove mine this W/E, the temp got no higher than 70, but I was moving 'briskly' the whole time, and no traffic, so your temps seem about right

Certainly don't want the oil to get any colder than that.

I know you have to be concerned about warming up the engine properly etc, but is it actually ok for the engine if you regularly sit at idle for this length of time?

My understanding in general has been that the best way to warm up an engine is to drive it, rather than sitting idling for ages.

Cheers all - sounds like I'm worrying over nothing.

re: the last point. I'm not normally one for letting it tick over for ages, but the oil temp was in (low)single figures for about 10 minutes so I thought I'd leave it for a touch longer than usual.

Like you, I heard that the best way normally was to give it a minute or two and then get going with the usual rules about low revs until warm.

Sounds almost exactly the same as me this morning.

Surely in this weather warming up and driving around isn't as easy in the summer. takes a few moments for things like the windscreen to clear a bit as well as letting the oil get near double figures.

I think you're better off driving very gently to get the oil warmed up, heaviest load on the cam and followers is at idle (anyone who has installed a new camshaft know this - you have to keep the engine at 2,000 then 3,000 revs or whatever for the first 5 minutes or so running the newly built engine).

Obviously assuming your windscreen has cleared enough to see where you're going!

Well on these cars the oil seems to cool down past this point sometimes on a motorway run in very cold weather, rising back up very quickly if you slow/come to a halt. We discussed this on a thread a few weeks ago (I think I posted about my change up lights coming on early).

Im lucky if I get 50 - 55 whilst driving in this cold weather in the T350. Is does sound a little high for the time year if its a reading whilst driving. Mine does return to 70-75 when in traffice tho

From cold I get in the car and go, I do not exceed 2500 revs until I hit 70c oil temp. On Sunday in 2c sunshine it was varying between 60 and 70 whilst travelling at a steady 70mph on a dual carriageway.

On my run back home, motorway driving, the oil bounces between 45 and 55 for the first 50 miles! When I get on to the A roads I gently tease it to get the oil temp up and then off we go!

That's very restrained of you - I thought a more graduated approach was recommended?

I do this:

2k until 30c
3k until 40c
4k until 50c
5k until 60c
No full revs unless 80c.

Alex I used to follow this approach - first 1k miles I had it. But after reading several posts from the speed six forums on PH - I have now switched to the Maddog approach !! I suspect its anyones guess if it makes any difference to the life of the S6. But it does make for safer driving in this weather

I don't have the destructions in front of me, but the key is to keep below 3,000rpm until the oil temp hits 60. Many of us are a little bit extra cautious.

I'm lucky - setting off from home and driving through High Wycombe to the M40 junction gives the car enough time to hit 60deg, even with the oil temp in single digits on startup and driving off straight away.

Off to the dealers now for a new speedo sensor, oil sender unit and those suspension changes I mentioned the other day. Will report back on the suspension if I find out anything (or end up in a ditch ).
