Well got up this morning, and thought I would give the TVR a nice little wash and clean. Braved the cold and made it sparkle. Then seeing that the fuel gauge was at 22l, and it was dry thought a quick run up to the nearest shell station (pinner) for top up of shells finest was in order.

Duly went up and filled up and was coming back through pinner when I noticed the engine going down on power and then cut out, just on the hill coming down. Coasted and tried to restart but no joy so continued coasting and pulled into a bus stop. Engine would fire but shutdown. Tried locking and unlocking.

Called the TVR centre who gave me good advice but the car would not budge. So called the RAC. Was now raining and getting a nice and cold. After explaining that apparently they wont be able to fix it. They sent an engineer. Whilst sat still I got a lot of abuse from people saying TVRs are cp but also a few thumbs up. Couple of Pistonheads members said hello as well including a nice Griffith owner who was straight out and willing to help.

When the RAC engineer turned up we tried everything we could but concluded it was a transport in job, so I spent another hour waiting for that.

Finally got the car to the TVR centre and unloaded and it definately looks like all the electrics and immobiliser are playing up. So no trip to goodwood tomorrow .

Hard luck - it does sound like some sensor or other has come loose, or the immobilisor is playing up (but then I wouldn't expect it to fire at all). Hope it's easy to fix (warranties are useful in situations like this aren't they!).

Sorry to hear that Maddog, especially with the track day booked.

I thought I was going to be stranded at Donington today - in just the 3rd of the viewing laps I started to get a misfire. It coughed and spluttered for about 30 seconds but didn't give out completely. As the only TVR there I was dreading the bollox I'd get if I had to pull out before the day started!

Then it started firing OK again. I pulled off and went for a blat up and down the entrance roads and it didn't reappear so filled up (tho it already had 20l) and carried on with the day. I guess a vapour lock or some such - whatever, it went like a train the rest of the day.

Hope they get it sorted for you soon.

Interesting that does sound sort of similar. It went down on power and then died. But by the time it got to the dealer it was definitely in its own land with the electrics doing all sorts of weird stuff.

Were the dashboard lights flashing and doing all kinds of code displays as if it were going through some kind of a mental power on self test? I've heard this kind of thing happening with high humidity/moisture interfering with the electrics.

Yes but only once the car had reached the dealer. It was ok in that respect until then.

Me too, actually I am feeling quite depressed about it. I had the evening to myself, the other half was out, I just installed heating in my garage and I wanted to give her (the car) a nice little polish! Oh well, instead I can work on the register I suppose! If anyone is thinking, dont let things like this put you off, as I just told someone today who was busy laying into me, both BMW's and my Audi tt had spent more time in the garage than with me at 4000 miles so I am not complaining!

Sorry to hear about the breakdown - and it really doesn't help when the public start spouting the usual uninformed rubbish.

I'm usually around Pinner way on a Saturday but was up in Manchester this weekend - 500 miles in the S without missing a beat - and seen loads of breakdowns and none TVR's - so there, humbug.

Simon, if it’s any consolation same thing happened to me – it was just the HT leads needed replacing…luckily I managed to limp home before it finally gave up the ghost.

Sorry to hear about your car, and shame you missed the Goodwood meet - hope it gets sorted quickly, and cheaply

My 350 had a problem with cranksensor

All that need doing was to have a washer taken out so that it sensed the crankshaft position and not trhin air. Dream M/cs sorted it for me.

Simon,

Spotted you parked up at the bus stop with the bonnet up, and figured that it must have been your bright yellow tamora. What a place to break down, a little embarrasing? Also not surprised to hear about people dropping snide remarks, only jealous.

Would have come over to see if I could lend a hand but the RAC guy had turned up so looked as if it was all in hand.

Must have been a bad day for TVRs because I saw a Griff sitting in the Shell garage on Pinner Green with it's hazards on looking as if it didn't want to start.

Hopefully see you around again soon.

Yes it was hardly good advertising but on the whole it was just one of those grin and bare it moments! The news on the car is that there was water ingress into the ECU's, so thats being rectified.

Which 'ECUs'? Something in the 'sealed' compartment near the battery or the ECU in the driver's footwell?

Don't you hate electrics sometimes!

Yes, I too would like to know which (and where) ECU. The only time I thought the car wouldn't start was after coming back to it in Cheltenham, and it had been pouring with rain. I started the car, but it just kept cutting out,, this happened a few times until I turned on the ignition and held my foot on the accelerator (something I HATE doing as the oil takes a lttle time to reach the engine). The only plus point was that when it did fire up, with the pedal pressed down, it scared the bejesus out of my passenger, who happened to be my work collegue's mom, who hates cars and driving at the best of times!! lol
