Out for a nice stroll from Bucks to Devon and back yesterday, which gave me the chance to test the change up lights on many many occasions I noticed the lights now come on around 1,000rpm earlier than they are set to. Anyone else had this? I'm going to adjust the settings on the setup menu to see if this somehow resets them.

Not a massive problem as I have yet to hit the rev limiter, but the light do catch my eye as I'm exercising my right ankle past row of cars which look like they are parked on fast roads like the A303

I think you might find that the oil temperature was not as hot a it should have been!! The change up lights work in conjunction with the oil temp sensor to make sure you keep within the graduated rev limits as the engine warms up....
Its not a fault - its just trying to protect the engine!!

(of course, if your oil was already at 80 Deg, all the above is void..!! )

My oil never got near 80deg until I got stuck in a traffic queue. In cold weather such as this past weekend, even if the oil temperature got up to 60+ deg it drops down to 50ish at high speed cruise (say 95 on the motorway). Kind of makes the car a bit pointless to drive 3 months of the year if that's the case because any chilly winter drives will probably result in the same oil temps. Unless my sensor is playing up a bit ...

I'm always careful to keep below 3,000rpm until the oil is warmed through, but to be restricted on revs after 100 miles of driving because the oil temp decides to drop is ridiculous. It's in for it's 6,000 service shortly so I'll ask the dealer to check it out.

I agree and have found very much the same thing (especially as I have been driving in Norway for most of the year..!!)
I collect mine from its 6000 mile service on Thurs too, so I'll ask the same question...

where is yours getting services btw? It waould be good if we were getting seperate opinions!

Where I bought it from - David Hendry's in Malmsbury. I have a few snags too so I'm going back to the original dealer (such as headlight alignment and alarm adjustment - nothing major). No mechanical faults though

What temperature should the oil be at before exceeding 3k revs, 6k revs, etc...?

I always wait for the water temp to be up near 80/90 before exceeding 4k revs, but should pay more attention to the oil really!

3000 rpm to 40Deg
4000 rpm to 60Deg
about 6800rpm to 80Deg

(From Memory! )

There is another thread on here somewhere which has all this info on though!

Scary! Oil should be at least 60 before you venture over 3k rpm. On my daily drive, my water temp hits 80/90 at least 10 mins before my oil temp hits 60/70.

Maybe this would explain why SOME S6's go bang early.

Personally until I hit 60 degrees I never go over 2500 rpm. Then from 60 to 70 I tend to stay below 3500 rpm. But when I get to 70 I tend to use the full rev range. That said like others have said before I tend to find the oil cools down to 65 on long journeys at 70mph.

Same oil temp situation here - not getting above 60. Makes a change for a TVR to run too cool, eh! Dealer checked my oil sensor & changed it but it's just running cool.
I'm about to wrap some thin heat-reflecting blanket on the lower half of the tank to help it get up to temp; should be easy to do & remove. I don't fancy going everywhere at low rpm until Spring!

If the change up lights work in conjunction with the Oil Temp sensor, then is it not OK to use the lights as the change up indicator??

Dawil - we should be monitoring oil temp guage first before venturing above 3000rpm anyway, like you have to with bike or race engines. I think they mean it!
