Apologies for being such a dullard.

How on earth does the Pioneer Headunit come out of its casing in a Tamora???

It baffled both me and the guy from Halfords who tried all sorts of unlocking keys, but it wouldn't shift. I also tried removing all the screws from behind the removable face, but still no joy.

Halfords man thought it may be screwed in from the back, as some convertibles are?, to make it more secure.

AFAIK, there should be a Pioneer key to remove the head unit, when changing mine for the sat nav unit, there didn't seem to be any probs, it may be best to go to a specialised car audio centre, I would! Having said that, the head unit shouldn't be too difficult to remove, and the tool to do should be available in Halfords, Bloody TVR, nothing's easy!! lol

Exactly!

We tried loads of unlocking keys at Halfords with no luck - it looked as if the whole bloody dashboard was about to come off!

Does anyone have the unlocking keys for the standard pioneer headunit who could

a) let me know where to get them
or
b) mail them to me so I can borrow them - I promise to return them and pay postage!

Cheers, James

It's two long metal strips with a hook at the end. I bought mine off ebay described as standard Pioneer head removal tool for about 2 quid and didn't have a problem removing the head unit with them.

Just did a quick search on ebay now though and there's none for sale...

Mine came out easily with the Pioneer keys which I had from a system I bought for my last TVR. I can only guess that your headunit is stuck in place and needs a bit of persuasion. Certainly shouldn't be screwed in from behind to be best of my knowledge.

The keys should work, but some radios (head units) do have a spigot at the back which can be bolted to the mounting cradle. Rich...

sidpinup,

If you don't mind sending me your keys, that'd be really kind and I'd be grateful! Can't seem to locate any to buy anywhere - unless anyone has any suggestions other than eBay?

I will of course send you them back promptly. I'll email you my address.

RichB - thanks for the advice but I hope you're wrong in this case!

Cheers Maddog,

Isn't pistonheads full of nice people?

Oh yeah, and glad to keep you amused! Let us know when the Tamora register is ready and I'll stick my car down.

If I could find them I'd ask the car theives who took the Pioneer unit from my Tuscan.

The general technique appeared to be:

1) Smash window
2) Break surround to 'speedo pod' (not sure how this assisted the process though)
3) Lever out the system with a screwdriver
4) scarper

Burburry hat optional

.. having said that if I knew who they were I'd be asking them a few other things.. It was about six months ago now through so I'm chilled... grrrrr.

Another daft question.
But are u sure u removed the grey plastic surround first.
If so then should be fairly easy to remove, I didnt have the keys but found 2 small kebab skewers did the same trick. Also large tiewraps work too.
As you slide in slowly each side you can here a click which indicates the stereo should be released, but mine was very tight and took some shifting

Nick,

OK, I didn't take the grey plastic surround off first, although when I tried, it was stuck fast! Is there a trick to it or do you just yank it? I almost pulled half the dashboard off so I assumed you could leave that on.

There's also holes for the unlocking keys to go through the grey plastic surround so I didn't think it was necessary.

Jimmy if the hole on the plastic frame is at the bottom then this is only to remove the plastic frame itself. Mine certainly doesnt have any holes at the side to be able to release the head unit.
Once off the two small spaces down each side can be seen into which the removal keys are inserted or skewers etc

hope this helps

Hi

They will be in the first class post tomorrow so you should get them Friday. They should fit OK, push them in untill they click and then just pull. I added an amp and new speakers so I have had mine out a few times.

Good luck

Thanks Ed,

I'll give it a go Saturday and hopefully get the tweeters in finally. I've been upgrading the audio system for about 3 months now!

Cheers,
James
