In the last couple of days the tappets have suddenly got much louder between 2500 and 3000 revs where you couldn't really hear them before (2500 Miles). Is this OK or should I run it up to the dealers??.

Thanks
Lindon.

Run it to the dealers, I had a similar problem with a Tuscan, even if it is only to put your own mind at rest. The problem on mine was excessive wear on the cam fingers.

Check your oil level, Lindon. I find that the tappets get a lot more noisy as the oil level drops, and it's nice to be able to hear the benefit of lubrication, when you top up the level...

I had this in France a few weeks ago. I filled her up with oil and the noise diminished in seconds. It's funny but it never used any oil until recently and now it uses about the same as my cerb....Get it up to the point where the fans cut in and check the oil immediatley you turn the engine off, that should be the right point. and use Castrol R oil.....not bloody Mobil 1....

Thanks guys, I'll check the oil tonight when I get in. I usually check it once week and like yours it never seemed to use any (but always showed over the max mark). And I've booked it into the dealers for next week to let them look at it just in case as I've got a local airstrip booked with a couple of friends for the end of July and I don't want to do any damage!

Flasher - what's wrong with Mobil 1?

Is this still the factory recommended?

What grade of Castrol R do you use as an alternative?

Was this after you had the tappets adjusted at the 1000 miles service? My cars just gone in for its first service (1250 miles) and the noise level of the tappets has become really irritating over the last few hundred miles. I was under the impression that after they were adjusted the noise would be less noticable?

Not sure what's reccomended, but a TVR mechanic who I trust told me to use Castrol Formula R. It's a tad expensive but seems to make it run a bit smoother.

My tappets got noisy at one point but half a litre of oil cured it...

I'm going to show my ignorance now but I don't know what a tappet looks like let alone sounds like!

How do I know if it's my tappets making a noise rather than something else?

Cheers..... Andrew

PS. I know the engine's in the front by that's about it!!!

Due to a change of sponsership it appears that Carlube is now TVR's preferred choice of oil. A leaflet now appears with all the new cars. I have a Tuscan but saw that leaflit in a recently PDI'd Tamora. Same spec as Mobil 1 though near as dammit.

Anybody use Mobil 1 Motorsport (15W-50) instead of standard Mobil 1 (0W-40)? Felt any difference etc?

It's Mobil 1 motorsport in mine, has been from the start (apart from run-in period obviously) this is what Hexham HC put in. Cars fine, 3500 miles.

Cheers.
