Hi,

I enquired as to how much a close ratio gearbox would cost fitted at gearboxman.com, (anyone heard of them?), and this is the response:

Hi Chris,
Exchange price for TVR close ratio T5 gearbox with ali bronze heavy duty fork kit is £1615.00+VAT or £1195.00+VAT with standard selector forks, there is a £300.00+VAT surcharge on no exchange unit. Could you please verify the T5 type currently fitted to you car by supplying the tag number (located on the mid` left of the gearbox) as there is a variation of the tail housings that we would need to know before starting a build for you.
We can arrange shipping of the close ratio box out to you for around £25.00+VAT and can then arrange to have your old unit returned to us (when you are ready) for around the same price, we have found this to be a popular option as the car spends the minimum time off the road but, should you choose to bring the box down to us that`s fine as well, what ever suits you best.
We currently have a three week waiting list but should you choose to have the gearbox fitted by us this can be reduced somewhat. Please let me know if you would like me to check the fitting diary for you.
Regards,
Stuart.

Now, do I really need a heavy duty fork kit (don't even know what the hell that is!! lol), and, am I right in assuming that the prices quoted have taken into account my normal gearbox as part ex?, Finally, how can I get to the 'Tag number' for the gearbox?

Thank you

Chris

Why do you want a CR box? The standard one is fine, unless you are really desperate for a very slightly quicker 0-60 time.

If you really want one the TVR factory would probably charge a similar amount and probably give you a warranty.

cheers

Chris,
You seem determined to spend money on your car.

If you go the CR route, beware, a CR box usually has a very tall first gear - not particulary practical if the vehicle is used for a lot of town work.

I have just heard good things about a CR gearbox, including the gear change is smoother, and as I live out in the sticks, town driving is few and far between.
I can only have a CR grearbox however, if I give up smoking, and meant it this time! and the money saved from smoking would go towards the box

The gear change is smoother and lighter with CR box; it requires less effort and is general better than the normal box. The standard box feels more 'notchy' and heavy in comparison imo, like something from a tractor

My driving is equally split between town driving and the open road; the CR is fine in town and the open road. Give up smoking and you'll be pleased with the benefits

They cr box are apparently very good especially for a road hooning. My only concern would be that the 3.6 engine could do with more torque for the taller first ratio. But once moving in gear acceleration at speed should be better.

Hmmm, I too have heard this, but surely 290NM of torque is more than enough, plus most of the demo/publicity cars were fitted with it, including the T350, which is essentially the same as the Tam,, I could understand the prob if the CR box was for our 1.2 60bhp Clio, but not for a 350bhp/290NM of torque TVR!

Chris

PS, have bought the new Road Angel 2, seems to work pretty darn well

Go for it if you can - it's correct what they say about the CR box when in traffic, but the acceleration you get after 50mph is just mental - it takes off like a rocket! (on a suitably arranged test track of course!)

You still change gear with zeroshift - just faster.
