I have twawled through the internet looking for the best deals on top notch satnav, and have settled on this http://caraudiosecurity.com/catalog/product_info.php+products_id+2313

Now, if I bought this, do any experts know if my Pioneer CD changer (factory fitted) would still work, and is this a job for a ICE specialist, or is home installation feasable? I ask because I think the Clarion version is (I think) over priced, but it works under 8mph.

Cheers

Chris

I think the answer is sort of You need to buy one of these http://caraudiosecurity.com/catalog/product_info.php+products_id+1486

I dont know if the standard head has one fitted, but all the high end heads need one to talk to anything. Quite easy to fit I am told, but I never got to see it being fitted.

The tested the unit you are talking about on Top Gear! It was a test between a car and a racing pigeon. The pigeon won because the sat nav sent them to the wrong village!!

before you buy, i think the gear knob will get in the way when it opens, i wanted to get one but the pioneer model definitely would not have enough room to open.

Thanks for the great advice again guys , I never even considered the gearknob being in the way!!!
I really want an 'all in one' solution, so I have a DAB radio, MP3/CD player, (I hate the stacker in the boot, too much hassle!), so I don't know what to do now!

You can get a universal speedo sender for any sat nav that will work perfectly. "sailes marketing" do a kit that has a magnet on a drive shaft and a small sensor that picks up movement. As www.clarionservice.co.uk, i do of course have Clarion. Or you could go to Farnell and make one yourself for £14.

Thanks david, useful info

Would this be better, having no pop up screen, and because it's Pioneer, it should work with my exsisting CD changer?

I think I had better wait for the outcome of my engine diagnosis regarding stuttering before I splash out on SatNav!! lol

Have you considered this?

Girlracer, do you have the TomTomGo? I'm thinking of getting one but not sure if it will work from the Tamora's lighter plug and, if it does, will it put undue strain on the battery. Also it says it comes with "car mount". Where would you mount the screen and is it easy to fit and remove. Finally is it really as easy as "Attach. Switch on. And GO"???

Popped into Dixons at lunchtime to have a look at a TomTomGo. Seems quite impressive. The sales guy suggested I buy it and if I didn't like it, return it within 14 days.

It has a big sucker on the bottom, so you can stick it to the dash or windscreen. I'm not sure where would be appropriate though.

Mmm, might just go and take a look at one myself! I wonder if it would fit (snuggly), not on the dash, but in that gap underneath the radio where the ash tray and lighter are? Still a bit worried about plugging anything into the car lighter and also wonder if the voice command can be heard above the Speed6 roar!

I have a tom tom type sat nav, but you must consider that you can store all the maps on it and often you have to connect it to your computer to upload the maps you need. all very good till halfway through your journey you change your mind about the destination!

Don't keep us in suspense! Then what happens?

Edited to say: How does the battery cope with it plugged into the lighter?

they cope well........... if you have the new destination map in memory. I find as i am living abroad this factor is very limiting, also im doing the cannonball run in september and either have to download all maps for europe or guess as we dont know were we are going!
Battery wise if you meant the car, i tend to unplug the devise when out the car, i have left it plugged in overnight without a problem.

Not too sure of the set up in a Tam, but my sat nav screen motors out, angles upwards(you select) and then motors back in a bit(you adjust) so it then sits flush with the dash. I have tried a few sat nav systems and have to say you can not beat a 7 1/2 inch touch screen with nice big symbols to hit. Then you choose a split screen display, left hand side showing 100 yrds ahead and the rest showing, whatever, 2 miles 100 miles.
Back to speedo pulse, if you can move along and the system doesnt know, it will be innacurate, for 28 seconds.Try that crawling along in town, and you might just as well get the AA map out.
