Just took one of the baby rear speakers out and measured up - looks like 6x9s will fit on each side in place of the existing speakers nicely. Has anyone done this? Seems the easiest way to get some bass and power from the rears. I plan to put front speakers in too, maybe the original rear ones

Thanks. But your profile says you have a Tamora. I'm talking about a T350 - there are 2 std rear speakers and there is just enough room to fit 6x9s (I think) in place of these on the rear bulkhead panel.

Dont put speakers behind you, it RUINS the soundstage.

Especially dont use 6x9's, they are bloody hideous things.

Some top notch Focal front components to replace the coaxials that are in there.

Tweeters just seperate on the same plane.

Will be 10 times better than 6x9's in the back.

The only speaker you should put behind you is a little sub which will add some punch, but then you are into external amplification which may or may not be your bag.

whay do you say 6x9s are hideous out of interest?

Mine sound great in the Tam and I used to compete with 6x9s in SPL and sound-offs.

cheers

Because, fundamentally they are a trade off like all co-axials.

Also, round speakers are the most effecient shape to push.

In things like SPL where clarity isnt an absolute priority I can see that 6x9's would be useful as typically you have a car full of massive drivers, 6x9's will raise the sound stage.

However, if its quality that you are after co-axial shouldnt play a part anywhere in that system.

Thanks for the hints, I'm no sound expert but 6x9 worked well in the back of my Chimaera. I know that whatever I do it will never sound as good as our TT's Bose system.

There are only 2 speakers as std in the T350, in the rear, miles away from you, and under the load cover if you pull it 'closed'. They are 10cm 100W Pioneer 1046 (I think). Pretty crap, no bass capability and I need to crank the head unit right up to hear anything (roof on). Now the head unit is not the best in the world, but I know you need to have decent speakers too - these are woefully inadequate. So, I do plan to put some front speakers in and probably some tweeters up front too. However, there are 2 speakers in the rear, which will leave big holes in the trim so I want to fill them with something that can push the sound towards the front of the car. From what you're saying something large and round with a bit of umph should do the job.

I won't be fitting front speakers for another month or so (I'm waiting for TVR to replace one of my door cards which is a bit of a mess build quality wise).

Plotloss, what set up do you have? (You can PM me if you prefer). I have a T350 with the godawful factory set up with no speakers up front. Sounds terrible, I barely use the stereo anymore 'cos it sounds so bad. It seriously needs front speakers. I got quite into car audio in a previous car and still have the gear for a very decent SQ setup... although I wouldn't wanna weigh down the TVR with that McIntosh amp!

There are 6x9 subs that may be a decent trade off?

As for the BOSE system in your TT, for about the same as that system cost as a new option you will easily be able to far exceed its quality with the right kit.

The issue is you want to place the music on the dashboard underneath the rear view mirror.

Anything you put behind the driver will drag this stage back. A whacking great pair of full range 6x9's will pull this stage back to between you and your passengers shoulders so the framing of the sound will be lost.

If you place only bass in the back, which being low hertz has a higher penetration the sound stage will be largly unaffected.

So, high quality components with seperate tweeters and good crossovers in the front and either the 6x9 bass doofers without mid/tweet or a little sub...

Let me know how you get on fitting speakers in the door - I'll probably be doing the same thing when I get mine!! (Eventually! )

... and there was me thinking the TT's system sounded ace.

Thanks for the info - so I need to focus on the front. OK, I'll leave the rears alone for now.

TVR's answer (option on pricelist) to fitting front speakers is an awful protruding lump high up on the door panel - looks horrible, not sure if it sounds any good.

Where would you suggest fitting front speakers on a T350 (or a Tamora) then? There are some pics on my website if you want reminding what the door/front trim setup looks like.

I was thinking of the lower front part of the door where there is a kind of pocket (so room at the back). This is probably too low for good sounds though. There isn't a location that would work on along the dashtop itself without looking really messy IMO.

That's what mine are like. I've seen another car on here that has had speakers fitted at the bottom of the door (using the space provided by the door pocket). While this is aesthetically more pleasing, as Plotloss said, you want the speakers at roughly ear height.

Unless you've grown ears in your ankles

You can fit some tweaters in the corners of the dash - don't forget, they'll only be the diameter of an AA battery. Ish.

Mine (front speakers) are not the best speakers in the world, but then I got them for free so I can't complain.

I'll think about replacing them at some point, once I've stopped spending money on wheels, exhausts and suspension

You could place the bass/mid unit fairly low down the door without issue as lower frequency is interupted by things like legs and clothing less.

The tweeters could then go a bit higher up the door, you want them on the same plane as the mid bass and not too far apart but the higher up the better. In line with your ear is best, but rarely practical.

I've got 4 speakers in the T350, 1st time I used the radio was before I took it for the 1st service - I was too engrossed in the new sounds to think about it.

I've just recieved a new CD so put it in the car for a listen on the way to work, I couldn't hear what was giong off because the exhaust sound was fighting with the CD. I tried it again on the way home tonight, but with the targas off it was a complete waste of time.

I've decided to buy a sports exhaust for my aural entertainment.

(ps I've got Focals in the front of my workhorse - they're pretty good for the price)

6x9" rear speakers will not fit into the recess at the back, the rear door solnoid will be in the way, its on the passenger side between the speaker and the little inside door. Im putting them in mine at the moment and i need to space them off 45mm. Sounds much better than those silly 4" pioneers.

Good Luck. Nothing is simple.

Dont forget if you use component speakers you've got to find space for the crossovers to
