When i got my car it only had 1 key, so went to my local dealer and ordered a complete new key assembly

Key arrived in 2 days and dealer told me i had to get it booked in to be programed for the car which i did for next Sat and it will take about 30mins

Had a little search on the web and found some instructions on how to programme it yourself, picked up the key today and thought I'd give it a try and 30mins later i now have a working key, HAPPY DAYS smile

I thought you just had to open the door with it manually and turn the ignition on!?

Of course smile

1. Turn the ignition to ON, then wait 10 minutes for the next step in the programming sequence.
2. After the 10 minutes has elapsed, the car horn will chirp once. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position within 5 minutes after the horn has sounded, then to the ON position within 5 seconds after switching it OFF.
3. Leave the key to the ON position for 10 minutes. After the 10 minutes has elapsed, the car horn will chirp twice. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position within 5 minutes after the horn has sounded, then to the ON position within 5 seconds after switching it OFF.
4. Leave the key to the ON position for 10 minutes. After the 10 minutes has elapsed, the car horn will chirp 3 times.
5. Verify that the security indicator in the instrument cluster has stopped flashing and attempt to start the vehicle.
6. Turn the ignition to OFF and remove the key from the ignition switch.
7. Move approximately 3 meters (10 ft) away from the vehicle and test the transmitter functions to validate that the transmitter has been programmed successfully.

What I would like to know is:

Does the vehicle use the code to open manually or the key pattern?

Same for the ignition really. Does the car (computer BCM) know the key?

How annoying! Why do we need the immobiliser code? Monkfish failed and the local Monaro approved Vauxhall dealer tried twice to code my new key using the Vauxhall supplied 4 digit code. It took four weeks and finally a call to the Holden tech team in Oz to find out that the code needed a 2 digit prefix for a new key to be added. Once we had this new code, it took the dealer about 5 mins to programme the new key. I wish I had known the above method when I bought the car, it would have save me over a month of hassle and over £50 in costs. Someone should forward this to Roger or Andy!

Just a thought: Is it wise to post this info on a public forum? If a thief were to buy a key and simply tow your car away, would they be able to programme a blank key to the car?

To buy a key you need the security code, key code, V5 and a driving licence
