My local dealer tells me the new Monaro will be coming to the UK in two versions, GTO and VXR, with the VXR being a 390 bhp model. Any truth?

Well I have just got back from a long chat with my Vauxhall man!

He has spoken to the powers that be and the info is:-

There will be two versions of the Monaro sold in the UK, the Classic and
the Sport, both with 5.7l 327bhp (maybe 325 bhp depends on how you convert KW to BHP)

The difference is in trim only eg. Air con or Climate etc.

There are to be 300 a year and supplied in 50 off batches starting in May 2004.

This info ties in with what "HRTHSVHoldenUK" said on the Top Gear post eg.
very few changes from the Australian Monaro.

The Vauxhall will not look like the red one on Top Gear programme but like the blue one
in the Top Gear Magazine.

This is where HSV come in they will supply the GTO (or GTS) as a HSV product alongside
selected dealers and it will be a full HSV product eg. suspension, brakes etc.

I will talk to the lady at HSV tonight and see if there is any more info on the HSV, but
they only normally let out info when it is set in stone unlike Vauxhall who seem to be
less organised.

This info as always is via other people but it seams to make sense!!!

I have had further conformation of the arrival of a HSV version of the Monaro, with a asking price of £35,500 and power around 380bhp.

If Mr Vauxhall is reading our forum as he might be since I gave him the details there are a few potential customers here who would love to help out on some product testing !!!!!

You guys might be interested to know that there was a very serious thought about importing the '69-on Monaros with 327 V-8. Either AUTOCAR or MOTOR tested one, which was provided by General Motors Limited Vehicle Division. GM Limited were at the time importing Opels, and they also officially imported US and Canadian cars although Lendrumm & Hartman in Hammersmith acted as concessionaires just as our friends Bauer Millett used to do from Manchester.

The reason for the suggestion was because Rootes were bringing in Aussie Chrylsers, and Lincoln Cars / Ford Personal Import-Export in London were importing Aussie Fords. As 1969 MY was the last year for rhd factory Chevrolets, GM Limited thought about importing Aussie Holdens just as GM South Africa were doing to satisfy the demand. However, it became obvious that the Monaro was not able to cut the mustard in the UK, and with import dues and shipping the costs would be too high.

Evening , I'm the person at Vauxhall working with Holden and HSV to bring Monaro into the UK so I'll clarify a few questions.

There are 2 models both based on the domestic australian products. We'll be bringing in the CV8 (badged V8) at £28650 and the coupe GTO (badged VXR) at £35595. Manual only , 5 colours on the V8 and 3 on the VXR model. Interior is anthracite leather.
There are going to be 16 dealers selling both cars and we're looking at 300 ( 250 V8 , 50 VXR ) vehicles this year.

Any questions on these pop them up on the forum and I'll be looking in every few days to see if I can answer them.

thanks

Hello Stu and welcome to the forum.

Good to see you taking an interest in our bit of cyber space.

As I look after www.hsvdriversclub.co.uk I get a lot of people asking about the new Monaro, so here are some questions to get going on!

1. Will the VXR version be branded "HSV" (we hope so)
2. Will the VXR have an options list eg. premium brakes, etc.
3. Will the dealerships have staff fully trained on Monaro and GTS
4. Will parts be available for the HSV GTS
5. Will the dealerships have separate facilities for HSV (like Lexus at Toyota)or will it be lumped in with the Astras etc.

As I am always after info for the club site if you get a chance to leak out a few pictures or video I would be very keen to put it on the site, as we have about 300 hits a day and one day last month I logged 180meg of downloads !!!! there is a lot of people who want info.

1. Will the VXR version be branded "HSV" (we hope so)
No the HSV brand will only be on domestic Oz and private import.

2. Will the VXR have an options list eg. premium brakes, etc.
If someone wants to go to the six pots then I'll talk the order thru with HSV and build a car specifically. At the moment we're the first country to get export cars and its proving....entertaining to arrange.

3. Will the dealerships have staff fully trained on Monaro and GTS
The problem is the GTS engine. We're not training our people to look after the Callaway developed engine. I believe LSV in Northampton are the best to approach on this one. Our people will be ok with the other variants.
4. Will parts be available for the HSV GTS
No not off the shelf but as we're official suppliers of vehicles and cars we have access to HSV parts. If GTS parts are required we'd talk to HSV about ordering them.
5. Will the dealerships have separate facilities for HSV (like Lexus at Toyota)or will it be lumped in with the Astras etc.
To start with no but eventually yes. This is the beginning of a new brand within Vauxhall modelled on the HSV concept. Initally there will be specialist techs at each facility followed by specific bays.We are setting certain standards already eg we have insisted that if a Monaro is in for service/repair a 6 cyl Vauxhall is the loan car....stop sniggering at the back.

HTH and I'll pop onto the other HSV forum as well.

Stu many thanks for your reply.

I am sad to see that you have decided not to use the HSV brandon the VXR, this I am sure is due to a political decision, as from editing the web site I know there is huge brand awareness in this country for "HSV" due in no small part to the internet....

I take some comfort in the fact you understand the Monaro is a special car and its owners will expect a very competent service team (we are very informed folk) as well as the fact that most UK HSV owners cars cost more second-hand than most of the current range of new Vauxhall cars.

Please keep us informed on progress of the Monaro.

Hi Stu,

I have a few more questions from some HSV owners.

1. When will the full spec on the cars be ready for the public.

2. Will you be showing the Monaro at the Goodwood festival of speed this year (on the hill or static)

3. what are the colours you mentioned above

4. have you considered trade in values for our HSV's

5. will there be a accessories pack for the Monaro ie. sun roof, tow bar etc.

Thanks again for your time.

Regards

Hi Stu

Could well be interested especially if you would take HSVs as part X. However could part of the deal be to keep HSV badges to stick on new car. Sorry but brand so important. I guess you really want the cars to lift the image of Vauxhall anyway. You are well on the way with the VXs.
