I run my HSV GTS at 33 psi all round normally and recently put them up to 36 for the Redline track day - what suprised me was that after 5 laps or so they increased to 48 psi.

Yes, I did expect with heat for them to increase but not by that much.

What do others recc for day-to-day and track events.

Appreciate your comments

Hi,

How did the track day go?

I have seen increase of about 10psi on my cars at track days so it must be normal!!!

I have just fitted new goodyear F1 rear tires and fitter only put 29psi in and the moment I drove home I could feel the car moving around at the back and a loss of front end grip. So tyre pressures are very critical on a HSV!

I keep mine at 35psi for the road. I'm not a track expert but the TVR lads do tell me the psi goes up big style for good grip.

ukhsv - how much did you pay per tyre - I take it they are the GSD3's - I've heard good reports about them.

Hi Guys

Bedford Autodrome was good fun, well managed set- up with excellent facilities, track may be flat but at least tarmac and smooth, early idiots were black flagged accordingly. Took some instruction which was helpful, needed to brake earlier and use every inch of track. 1.7 tons of car is not ideal for track use, oh yes and 6 mpg, got 8 at Bruntingthorpe! Still getting the car home unscathed is always a good feeling. Have to take my smart up there for some fun next time.

Thanks for your comments on tyres. I think for track use I’ll start at 30 psi as 48 (heated) can lead to embarrassing tail slides. Bruntingthorpe destroyed a tyre as it is so abrasive but some of that might be down to Bridgestone SO2’s (old stock), fancy
a change next time, used to F1 Eagles on a smart but do not think it would suit a heavy car so well or Pirelli Nero Zero’s that I currently run, maybe Michelin Pilot Sport?, still what do I know.

Any of you guys planning a track day?

I had the same thing with my Corvette on my first track day. Standard pressure is 30, I usually run at 32 but for my first track event I set them to 36 cold. By the time I'd done 4 laps of Silverstone my tyre over-pressure alarms were going off (trips when 42psi exceeded), bloody annoying when you've got 4 bells pinging away at you every lap ! My tyres went "off" after 6 laps and I had a bit of a moment exiting Woodcote. No doubt the increased temperature and pressure had got to them.

I have since learnt to leave the tyres at my normal road pressure for track use and haven't had a problem due to them since...

Thanks

Update, been told to try 28 psi to start, warm them up and should top out below 40 psi
