Just how strong is this gearbox, and are there any variations within the T56 name???
I am considering buying one for a future project, but they seem to be quite expensive.

Hi,

The T56 is a very strong unit rated at about 610nm torque but there are a few HSV with 900nm which are still going.

The T56 (later M6) has permantely meshed gears even reverse so its the syncro dogs that take a beating.

Holden T56/M6 has only one real problem apart from the noise (its a truck gearbox!!!) its remote gear linkage so not very accurte.

But if your project is a cobra kit you can move the gear shift pick point forward so it is a direct shift into the box.

I have a spec sheet here if it helps www.karrot.net/hsvuk/home/t56.pdf

Not for a kit car, its for a 1980 Granada.

Bloody better isnt quite the technical answer I was looking for Mike.
When I went for the toyota, most said it was unbreakable, and would handle 500bhp all day long.
Ive broke 2 so far. This time Ive stripped teeth though.
What do you think my next engine will do to it

Hi Stevie,

Take a look around these sites for the techie stuff. I've done my own checking and they are good for over 700 hp with stronger forks. I'm told the output splines may twist if you use slicks.

As for your next engine well, as it's likely to be like mine your existing box has a very, very short future ahead of it assuming you can keep traction. I have some good auto links as well because I to was worried about the stock 56. Once I found out about the build up kits I decided to stick with the manual option. Here you go.
