OBD1 and the later version OBD11 is the protocal used in the engine management system on GM cars (and many others)

OBD11 was widely in use on the Commodore range after 1997/8......

If you are looking to buy a scan tool make sure you quote your VIN number......

OBD port under the dash is the same on all cars..........

The choice of serial/usb is based on what your computer has in the way of conections on the back.

USB is faster but if you are only changing codes speed is not a problem.

Firstly you need to the differences between OBD1 and OBD2. Then you can decide which one is better than another one.
In OBD1 we can see some features discussed below.

1. OBD 1 is for manual cars which are made before 1995.
2. For each car there is an OBD1 scanner.
3. Only shows the CEL massages with no detailed codes.

In OBD2 we can see

1. OBD2 is for all cars which are made after 1996.
2. It shows the massages with full code.
3. Easy to update the software and also easy to use.
4. Works wirelessly via Bluetooth or WIFi.

So to my personal opinion OBD2 is better than OBD1 if your car model is after 1996.

The cheap ebay obd 2 will reset codes , it will read a displayed code but won’t read every thing in the car as they are as in the code readers fairly basic , an example 02 sensors failing on my 04 monaro would not come up on the dash as a fault but not as an o2 sensor fault , and could not be read , other options are phone apps and a wifi or bluetooth obd 2 reader , they will often give you more info , like live voltages needed for 02 sensors , a good obd 2 reader at a garage will tell you a lot more , ie when i had a rear abs sensor fail it came up on the dash that abs and tc off but did not tell me the fault , the garage obd 2 reader under the car being a holden did tell me fault
