Blaupunkt 6 Disc CD player - Lens clean
Discussion
Anyone had any success in wet cleaning, or even being able to get to the laser lens in the OEM 6 disc changer? After 20 years, this one is in need of a clean as CDs now jump and stutter. But getting to even see this lens is proving challenging....
Top lid of the changer is off and front control panel removed, but its rather stubbornly hiding its secret lens.
I can see what I think is it, way in the depths of the retracted mechanism, but no chance of getting to it. and given the complexity of the mechanisms, which would give a cuckoo clock enthusiast nightmares, I am not keen to undo any more screws.
When there is no CD in the player or changer, the playing mechanism, including the disc spindle and lens seem to retract back under some metalwork. Put a CD in it, let it start playing, then pull the player out of the dash, shows the mechanism in its extended position, with the CD on the spindle. But the lens is now under the disc and still inaccessible. And the CD cannot be lifted off the spindle for access, as the CD is now trapped underneath new metalwork....
Ideally, it wants to go into some kind of service mode that extends the mechanism with no CD, so the lens is accessible.
Anyone had a go at this?

The extended mechanism with disc spindle and, I suspect the laser lens, visible on some of the pictures on this thread....

Though some of the watermarks are in the most inconvenient spot.
There is talk of pulling out a bit of metal that is above the disc(s) but with several warnings of issues if you "mess with the springs...."

OK, sussed it. The trick that worked for me was to....
Pop the head unit back into the dash.
Make sure all CDs are ejected
Have the removal tools in and ready to go
Press the 'Load' button. This causes the mechanism to extend into the running position to be ready to receive a disc.
When the display says "Insert Disc", pull the unit out of the dash. This powers it down with the mechanism extended. Don't turn it off first, as that causes the mechanism to retract.
Lens now nice and accessible for cleaning!

Lens now duly wet cleaned, head unit back in the car and CDs playing again!

Mmm, wonder if that's what's needed for my 'Pauper-spec' single CD player? Takes CD but just spits it out after a few seconds.
Was looking forward to playing a bit of Thunderstruck when I first got it, even took a CD across with me when I picked it up in Wick!

Shoulda been at Murrayfield last Thursday night for that! Even though Angus did fluff it up a bit - Just proved they were playing it live! Maybe you were there? Quite a number of fellow Orcadians at it - Even bumped into a few I didn't know were going!Edited by Windy Miller on Tuesday 26th August 11:12

Deffo worth a try. A lens clean always the first port of call for a player that is being selective or jumping. Also may depend on what type of CDs you are trying. On the Blaupunkt 6 disc SS-S4 units in the Monaros, they only play original CDs or discs burned as CDs. They will not play discs with MP3s on them. You can still burn MP3s to a disc AFTER you have converted them to whatever file format CDs use - Possibly .cda or .wma Can't quite remember. But first step would be to get it playing a "real" CD by cleaning if need be.Gassing Station | HSV & Monaro | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
