Hi

Just got the 04 Monaro back on the road, after being on Sorn..

out on a proper test run I get stuck in traffic and it over heats!!

it seems the fans are not starting, the fuse is good, so it maybe the sensor.

firstly; where is it located, and secondly; can i bypass it to test the fans?

Cheers Yoss

I'm not sure how the system works, but did you try putting the A/C on? That would at least prove one fan. I would guess the A/C fan will be used if the car gets too hot.

Yes i did put the aircon on, and the fans didn't start.

come to think of it, the temp gauge stayed normal about halfway up.

then suddenly shot up, with a warning message on the dash. at which point i stopped, opened the bonnet both fans were running

switched the engine off n they stopped, i could not get them to start again!!

waited till it cooled, added water and it drove home OK.. left it running ,it over heats befor the fans start..

The dash gauge in modern cars is largely pointless.

1. Get a proper scan tool to view live sensor data. Doing anything else if you have not done this, is pointless.

The temp sensor is on the front of the right side cylinder head ( right side as looking at engine , not of car )

The ecu controls the fan relay and subsequently fan based on this sensor. If for whatever reason there is no water at this sensor, it may not read correctly. If the sensor is faulty, it may not read correctly, If the wiring is an issue, it may not read correctly.
Refer to step 1 and find out if it is working.

In short, test first, don't start replacing or tampering at random.

I would change temperature sender switch , from reading up but maybe wrong , front offside of engine as you look at the engine

There is no switch, it is a temperature sensor. Test, always test. Don't change parts at random

For reference, the temp gauge is programmed to sit at ~3/8 of the way up across all normal operating temperatures (85*-110*)

From rough memory, whenstationary the fans (should) come on near 110* ish and bring the temp back down to 100* ish before turning off again, they don't run constantly.

As stevie says, get some actual data out of it. If you have a cheap heat gun that might give you some insight into whether it is actually getting to the temperature it thinks.

If you are interested in making the temperature gauge marginally more useful, you can mod the dash to have the needle represent certain temp ranges. This is the command-line utility to make it happen: http://1337vending.com/vzclustermod/

These are the specifics:

"preset temp-gauge
Format: preset temp-gauge

This preset re-calibrates the temperature gauge to show closer to coolant temperature, rather than staying on 3/8 between 185-230*F. Formerly, it also changed the high temperature alert to 230*F, which now has been moved to a different preset.
The gauge markings will be as follows:

C = 140
1/4 = 167
3/8 low = 176
3/8 high = 180
1/2 = 200
5/8 = 210
3/4 = 221
7/8 = 224
H = 244"

Can confirm the above works on the 05 VXR at least, I think Mud had some initial issues doing that on his 04 but got it to stick eventually.
