More minor issues with the Monaro.

First, my head unit won't load CDs - "mech error".

I've seen the youtube vid where a Pontiac owner had the same problem, which he sorted by removing jammed CDs from the loader, reset it all and fitted it back in the dash.

Did the same yesterday afternoon, but found it a lot harder to get the CD platterns down to the base of the unit. Did manage it but the mechanism wasn't happy. Reinserted into the dash and I still have the same error. I'm assuming this is a mechanical issue with the loader mechanism that's somewhat beyond a one-off sticking event.

Anyone had similar and managed to sort it?

Second, my speedo needle has always read too high by 4-8mph, seemingly a bit variable although without a constant reference to a GPS speed it's hard to be sure.

Recently it's started reading very high, or sticking at 50mph or so, and this morning when I parked it stuck at 50mph, when I keyed off it fell to 20mph.

Has the Monaro got an afterfit speed limit adjuster (something like a healtech?) as it seems an odd issue to have if the speed sensing is all OE and adjusted in the software. As is the 4-8mph over-read.

Tyres are 245/35R19 which isn't far away from standard diameter and shouldn't be enough to make it over-read by that much.

Or could be an issue with the cluster or the diff sensor I guess? Googling previous threads suggests the cluster did this when the cars were nearly new but then settled down. Also some reference to a speedo adjuster "fitted by HSV" but don't know if that applies to Vauxhall Monaros or just grey imports or similar.

Any ideas?

I'm afraid I've got no help for you on this one other than your tyre size choice is fine for the 19's.
i'd probably just look at swapping out the CD player for another, they crop up on eBay etc.. Just make sure you get the security code with it. Or just replace with an aftermarket unit. Many have done this. I have a single din player in mine.
Regarding the cluster, not aware of any special devices here, its just a cluster although they are all programmed for their specific car e.g. diff ratios. So my cluster in my 5.7 VXR is programmed for the 3.7 diff I have, yours programmed for a 3.46 IIRC.
Note the 5.7 VXR (uber rare) is the only car to get a factory lower ratio diff, the 6.0 VXR shares the same diff as the CV8 so you could potentially pick up a 2nd hand cluster with very similar mileage and it should work.

Thanks.

Yeah I think the head unit is just farked. Unsure it's worth spending £400-500 on an aftermarket one, better things I could do with that. Can do without a radio for my ten minute commute, which is most of the car's use.

More googling suggests the speedos can do this, particularly in colder weather, so either ignore or remove the cluster and look for dry joints.

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

I'd unearthed a thread from way back where it suggested a speed adjuster had been added on import but it wasn't clear which cars that was for. Hence wondering if anyone knew either way, as it felt more like an aftermarket module issue than an OE equipment issue - but a dodgy joint in the cluster is very possible.

On the way home yesterday I checked the digital speed vs dial indication and both matched perfectly. But it was warmer than on startup yesterday morning, so I need to see it more often before I can get to the bottom of it.

i had the same cd issue , i did not want to go after market , most cars i have but the monaro one i did not want to change it , ejected all cds , turned it off , you don’t loose your code from memory of doing this i long time ago , and depending on the year the codes are often the same , plugged the cd player back in and it’s been fine for years , i even bought a spare cd player , the speedo if it’s only 4 over i would not be bother , 8 a bit more , the plus you won’t set a camera off , 4 mph over what you are doing is very normal reading , mines the other way , 70 mph on the clock is actually 72 mph

As for the dash. As many before you have found, with a period of little use and colder weather / damp being a factor, the dash gauges can leap around or stick strangely. Regular use will hopfully calm this down.
