So people, what have you all been driving since you started driving...don't be ashamed, we've all had some turkeys..I know I have laugh

So here goes for my somewhat checkered car ownership...

1. Talbot Samba
2. Opel Manta GT/E
3. Opel Manta GT/E Exclusive
4. Lotus Excel (Yes Loads of trouble usually serious)madcry
5. Vauxhall Astra 1.6 (Company Car)
6. Honda Civic (Company car)
7. Renault Laguna RTI (Surprisingly good)
8. Renault Megane Sport (Utter shi*e)
9. Skoda Octavia VRS (Mk1)
10. Skoda Octavia VRS (Mk1 modded to 350BHP) (Stupid quick and surprised a lot of so called 'fast' cars)
11. Mondeo ST200 (Good engine but dreadful electrics)
12. Skoda Octavia VRS Diesel
13. Mondeo Titanium X
14. Audi A5 Coupe (Sheep in wolf's clothing)
15. Audi A6 Avant (Boring, boring, boring)
16. Merc C250 AMG line (Looked great but actually a bag of nails)
17. BMW 320d (One of the best cars I've ever owned, amazingly well built)
18. Honda Accord Type R (Second car) (Took me 4 years to do a nut and bolt rebuild. Arguably the best ATR out there)
19. HSV Monaro (Second Car).....speaks for itself!

So there you have it...the good, the bad and the downright ugly

In purchase order, I tried to be an Alfa guy as well, but I've found my place thumbup

1. Renault Clio 1.2 - 150,000 miles in this over the years, proper cockroach
2. Monaro VXR - still going, 11 years now
3. Alfa GTV V6 - originally bought to be girlfriend's car, which I inherited back when there was a big bill
4. Volvo V70 D5 - moved house, got dog, long commute = sensible comfy wagon
5. Merc C250 TD - manual estate, bought for £377 for a stag do, sold with no MOT for £300 and it was shipped to Africa hehe
6. Alfa Brera V6 Prodrive - beautiful looking but uninspiring, lasted 3 months before a straight swap for the Ute
7. Holden Ute - VY, still going, was in JPS livery and went straight to Le Mans 1 week in to ownership, would love to manual swap it
8. Holden Commodore Sportswagon - VE, still going, still 'sensible' at the moment, will be supercharged eventually

That's a solid innings when you're only a few years older than me!!

How did you find the VXR8 compared to the Monaro? From the looks of it, not as good?

OK, I'll play. In purchase order, starting in 1998:

1. Fiat Punto mk1 Sporting 1.2 16v - 5yrs/60k
2. Vauxhall Astra 'G' 1.6 SXI - 5 months/??k
3. Renaultsport Clio 172 ph2 - 3yrs/35k
4. Honda Civic Type R EP3 - 8mths/8k
5. Seat Ibiza Cupra TDI - 18mths/14k
6. VW T5 campervan - 11yrs/70k
7. BMW Z4 e85 3.0i SE - 3.5yrs/30k
8. BMW 330i e90 M Sport, manual - 3yrs/11k
9. MINI Cooper S hatch R56 - 2.5yrs/8k
10. Ford Transit Custom dual-cab - 4.5yrs/21k miles so far
11. Vauxhall Monaro VXR 6.0 - 3.5yrs/9k miles so far

Looking back with rose-tinted glasses on that Punto was brilliant. My first car at 19, a mighty 1.2 16v with 85bhp but that's more than enough when you're young, male and immature. It was that or a Saxo VTR but I wanted to be different. 60k miles in the hands of a young male bellend and never once broke, no idea how.

Out of my history there's only been the one 'bad' car - that fking Astra. I was convinced (rightly, in the end - the gearbox popped soon after selling...) that the Punto wouldn't survive much longer in my possession.

Clio 172 was a great car let down by Renault's response to the reliability. Two years of joy followed by a year of despair with Renault dealerships and warranty issues. Should've been clear cut warranty repairs but utterly incompetent garages and ahole dealerships. I'd have another Clio but never another new car from Renault, ever.

I never quite clicked with the Civic which I bought on the rebound from the Clio, despite the Clio's many faults. Glad I owned one because VTEC (yo).

Ibiza was an attempt at growing up. Failed, as today shows and me driving a Monaro... Wasn't a bad car. Not exactly a good one either.

Bought a T5 panel van and converted it to a camper. Best thing ever as it meant I could have something less practical as a daily, hence the Z4. Kept the van 11 years before swapping to the Transit.

Z4 was my intro to bigger engines, all things relative. That M54 3.0 straight-6 is a peach but the Z4 is flawed, the ride in particular. Doesn't stop it being a good car and IMO Chris Bangle's best work.

Two seats isn't enough when you factor in a baby so I sought the closest thing to a Z4 with four seats: the 330i. Another great engine (N52, 3.0 straight-6) and probably my biggest selling mistake - I didn't need it so sold it in favour of keeping the campervan. Looking back wish I'd kept it as they don't make cars like that now.

MINI was a reaction to the boredom of only driving the campervan for two years. Idiocy really but I thought I'd get longer with the MINI before the kids got too big for it, but they really are tiny in the back.

So the Monaro. I was only supposed to be searching for an interesting car to hire while on an Australian holiday but one thing led to another. Ended up with a Commodore VF SV6 on that holiday and returned home to a Monaro biggrin. They were on my radar as far back as before buying the Z4 but I'd never had the balls to go ahead and buy a Monaro. I'm now 3.5 years in and plan on it being here a while longer.

I was thinking that too - I'm on a few years older and my history's way shorter. Don't ask me about my bicycle history though, currently on numbers 36. 37, 38 and 39 eek

What can I say, I love cars and can't keep the same one for long apart from the Monaro which I purchased in 2008, most of the others were owned for a year to two and some even less, the Mk3 Golf Gti's were purchased, done up then sold on.

The VXR8 I had for about 2.5 yrs. I purchased with the intention of selling the Monaro and using that money to mod the VXR8 as I had done everything to the Monaro, I just didn't click with it, the car just didn't have that raw grunt and that unhinged feel to it, I don't know what it was, had I not owned the Monaro then I think just on its own merit I would have kept it, I sold it for £500 less than I paid for it so I was happy enough.

My next purchase is going to something different, I fancy trying something like an A45 AMG or a M2 or M140i, not sure yet as the new house comes first hence selling the MK7.5 Golf R :-(

My list - quite a strong Vauxhall bias to be fair! My ownership journey must have started around 1987

And quite a few are owned in parallel - so the LC and Nova co-existed!

Morris Marina 1.3 - hateful car but served a purpose as the first one and it didn’t kill me in the process.
Astra Mk 1 1.2
Astra Mk1 1.6SR -how I wish I had never let that go!
Belmont 1.8Sxi - company car.
Carlton GSI 24v
Lotus Carlton
Nova 1.2
Carlton GSi 24v (different one)
HSV Commodore VT
Carlton GSI 24v (first one back again). Brilliant car and better value, £ for £ than the LC in my view.
VXR8 E1 (LS2)
Astra Mk1 GTE
HSV Commodore VT (same one again)
HSV E3 Ute
VXR8 GTS E3
VXR8 GTS Gen F

Not really. You can always look back and see how things have gone up in value - houses being an obvious one - but I had the LC for over 10 years and enjoyed it but its sale funded lots of other things subsequently that I would never have got to experience otherwise had I kept the LC

I have been told that I am only allowed 2 cars - if I want something else, one of the current ones has to go! So they tend to cycle around. The one that I really wish that I had kept was the GSi - K31 LNG. No chance of finding one like that any more even at todays mad prices.

The Gtr is an R35 jdm import , i had been thinking about one for sometime , they can be money pits it can be a bit luck of the draw , you want a tuned one , standard is fast tuned is i can best describe as mental , easy to drive and greet fun , i believe not using launch control 0 to 60 is around 3.3 seconds , 100 mph is around 8 seconds , buy the best car you can afford , lots of places to look after them

Omitted all the boring stuff like the kiddy carriers.

1980 - 1982 Vauxhall Chevette 1.3 Salon. (Only so much you can do with a 1256 engine)
1982 - 1982 Fiat 131 Super Mirafiori (1.6) (okay but not the 131 sport version)
1982 - 1988 Vauxhall Chevette HS (Should never have sold this one)
1985 - 1987 Honda S800 Coupe (different)
1987 - 1987? Ford Escort mk1 stage rally car (Crashed)
1988 - 1988 Ford Escort RS Turbo (Disappointing car)
1988 - 1995 Opel Ascona 400 (Should never have sold this one)
2007 – to date Vauxhall Monaro CV8 (Not ever planning to sell this one)
2017 – to date Suzuki Swift sport ZC32 (Not that fast, but so much fun)

Most boring / Ugly / slow
Late 1990s Peugeot 205 Diesel (non turbo)

Interesting that there's more than one with a Suzuki Swift Sport alongside a Monaro. Was on my radar before I bought the MINI as I'd heard they were a right good hoot to drive, but I never go around to looking at them seriously.

It's the type of thing I'd like to add in a few years for the kids starting to drive, i.e. something I'd enjoy driving too, but realistically I don't expect one would be feasible for a new/young driver.
