Once again I come looking for a bit of advice from you guys.

Over the last few weeks there have been times when starting the car ( VXR 6.0 ) it almost seems as if it won't happen but then it seems to just do enough to fire it up. Yesterday when I turned the key it did nothing at all, then on the second attempt again it just managed to fire up. The fear is we go out and get stranded. The battery is less than a year old and was an expensive. Even after going on a 50 mile run at the weekend and parking up for 30 minutes it just did enough to start.

Is it the battery? or could it be something like the starter motor? only guessing really not that clued up in these sort of things

Appreciate your thoughts and advice

Probably the starter motor, they do get weaker with age as they see a lot of heat etc.

Are you on facebook? A guy on there refurbishes them, send him your old one and he'll send you a refurbished one sort of thing. PM me for details if you'd like.

Mines doing the same , Although after a run its worse but think its due to the heat. When cold with a battery fully charged its fine.

before throwing money at it , try cleaning the earth lead battery end and starter motor end , i have an extra earth lead on all my cars , if it’s got a poor earth not getting enough power to the starter motor then it won’t crank very well , even at a year old , a new battery can start going down hill , so check voltages before cranking and at cranking , cranking voltage mine was 9.7 volts or so , so either not charging enough or new battery time , before cranking should be 12 or more , if neither of that helps then possible starter motor issue , the monaro displays voltage and the r8 displays battery life and voltage , check the alternator charging voltage too

firstly check and clean all terminals and check cables for damage

most local motor spares will test alternator and battery for free

batteries can fail.. dont assume new means ok

OK, I've asked if he is on PH as I can't remember and if he isn't I'll get some details for you smile

It's a bit awkward to get to, as my car is in bits I can get you some good pictures of where it is and the bolts to undo etc., will post them up this evening (assuming I remember!)

Would be worth checking the grounds and so on as others have suggested, and will also give you an idea of access etc. for getting to the starter if it does need changing.

Same here. Was fine until a couple of years ago. Originally tried changing the battery but it still does it occasionally, only on a warm start.

I forgot the pictures...

Right, so, the starter is buried under your headers on the driver's side. As I have no headers, no ABS module and no associated bracket, it's a bit more accessible, but either way, here's a particularly obvious picture of where it is on the engine.

It's the silver / black thing at the back under the cylinder head.

To get to it, you'll want to go under the car and use a 13mm on an extension to undo the 2 bolts that hold it in place. There are also some wires going to it of course, disconnect those (which will be awkward in situ) and keep them separate from each other. One of them is live so will also short out on the bodywork, so disconnect your battery -ve too...)

This is it from below.

This is it from the side, notice the steering rack / column to the right of shot.

Getting it out will no doubt be good fun with an exhaust in the way, if you have long tube headers then good luck. If you need to remove the headers, you need to drop the steering rack (just two bolts, not hard to do) so the job may escalate time wise...!

Any more pictures or anything let me know, as I say it's in bits and I've thrown a lot of stuff away, so can give a better view than usual

I should add I have since fitted the plastic flywheel / bellhousing dust covers that are missing in those pictures hehe
