Coolant temperature LS2 Monaro
Discussion
Hi all I think I may have air in my coolant, can anyone tell me the normal operating temperature of the coolant, after a drive today put the diagnostic mode on to read the temperature and I was showing 218F whilst driving and 228F whilst driving through town.
I have no coolant loss and have always checked radiator when cold (it's always full up to the top of the neck in the radiator) car is Monaro LS2 and I am supercharged.
The needle on the temperature gauge never goes past halfway, but before I changed the radiator a couple of years ago it was always in the same place regardless of the driving conditions, all input would be greatly appreciated.

My LS2 Monaro sits at 195 when moving but within seconds of stopping the temp starts to creep up and I have seen 230 before.
I’ve heard a lot of people say their temp gauge never moves once warmed up but mine will move to the halfway point within a couple of minutes if I’m stuck in traffic.
The fans are on by that point and the needle falls back down to its usual spot but I’ve always wondered why mine does it and no one else’s seems to.
Anyway, I got a deal on a Mishimoto radiator a couple of years ago, so swapped out the OEM one for that but it still happens.
The needle has never went above the halfway point and the fans always bring it back down quickly so I don’t pay a huge amount of attention to it anymore.

The temperature gauge in the Monaro is programmed to read at ~3/8 when the coolant is between 185 - 230*F. This is intentional behaviour, basically so that during 'normal' operating temperatures the needle never moves.
If your gauge is going above 3/8, then the coolant is likely above 230*, or feasibly the temp gauge in the dash has been recalibrated. The Americans made a tool called VZClusterMod that can be used to set the gauge calibration. If your needle moves around a lot during driving, then you've likely had the temp gauge calibration updated.
If it's to the standard new calibration by VZClusterMod, then the readings should now correspond to roughly:
C = 140
1/4 = 167
3/8 low = 176
3/8 high = 180
1/2 = 200
5/8 = 210
3/4 = 221
7/8 = 224
H = 244
Hope that helps clear things up a bit about the gauge.

Hi James thanks for that, I don't know of any calibration carried out, been a long time owner of the car, I am only the second owner bought when only just over 12 months old.If your gauge is going above 3/8, then the coolant is likely above 230*, or feasibly the temp gauge in the dash has been recalibrated. It's the first time I have looked at the temperature whilst in diagnostic mode whilst driving and it started to make me wonder, I had a lot of trouble getting rid of the air when I first fitted the mishimotto radiator just over 2 years ago and just wondered why my needle fluctuates slightly, my max reading was 228f and they needle is just below half way so I assume from the above comments I am running normal?

Hmmm, that’s interesting. I can’t imagine mine has been modified though.
It was a standard car when I bought it 10 years ago and still is, apart from the radiator and exhaust.
Of all the mods for previous owners to do, it would be a strange one.
you can also turn on the shift light.. may the dash say holden or hsv , does it do any of those It was a standard car when I bought it 10 years ago and still is, apart from the radiator and exhaust.
