Hi Everyone.

A bit of a random question, but does anyone know if the boot spoiler on the VXR8 actually produces any downforce which would improve performance, or is it purely cosmetic?

I'd guess it's the latter because the car would have to be moving/cornering very fast for a spoiler to produce much beneficial effect but then again some cars, such as Porsches, have active spoilers that raise when the car is travelling at 70mph so perhaps there might be some benefit at normal road driving speeds.

Many thanks,

Paul.

Hi Paul ,
the spoiler does create downforce , it normally starts working at 70 mph plus , someone stated theirs was bending slightly when doing 170 mph in a vxr8 lol , i think the info was from walkinsaw regards the bending , every day driving limited effect , going very fast more of an effect , i’ve seen some reports of spoilers adding 30 per cent more downforce at higher speed , it reduces top speed , would you notice it that’s another question but it clearly helps ,

REAR WING. A smooth, properly shaped wing with large end plates in a clean airflow field can produce as much as 8 pounds of downforce for every pound of drag that it creates. Raising the rear of the wing increases its angle of attack, and the downforce that it creates.1 May 2013

I would say yes you will get some useful down force at high speed on a VXR8. HSV would have done a fair bit of testing to make sure it has the desired effect.

At thunder Road a lot of VXR8 drivers would take the rear wing off as it would increase top speed by a couple of mph.
Downforce isn't much of a requirement when you're looking for top speed
I think Araf used to have a wing off of a SS Commodore which gave less downforce.

Personally I'd be surprised if it added anything beyond drag and looks, that's the case with the Monaro anyway hehe

If you want useful downforce for competitive track work, go big or go home hehe

Hi Fellas.

Thanks for your replies - I don't think I'll ever be driving fast enough to need a bigger spoiler than the one fitted as standard!

All the best,

Paul.

On the Gen-F, yes most definitely.

Removed mine for TR as stated previously and for braking from 180ish the back end most definitely lifted and was light compared to with it on and could feel crosswinds affect the car even under acceleration compared to with it on. I guess around 130-140 was where the difference was felt.

Also on the Gen-F, don't bother tucking in the wing mirrors without taping them, under high speed they pop back out again biggrin And remove the aerial as it will knock on your back window biggrin
