Hi guys n gals.
I'm looking to try and remove the roof trims, I'm assuming they just clip on to the roof?
As anyone removed theirs before and if so have you got any tips to minimise potential breakages?laugh
Cheers.

I wouldn't remove if I were you, yes it clips in, I am very reluctant to pull anything of mine if made of plastic as it usually doesn't end well, as stated in your other thread trim parts are virtually impossible to get it's no different in Australia as I have a friend who has a monaro.

It's very frustrating when you want things perfect not to want to try and pull things off to try and improve/replace I am the same as you but I have to say the quality of the exterior trim parts on our cars is nothing short of absolutely terrible at best!

Just waiting for Australia to come up with something better aftermarket.

They've got to come off for paint sadly.
Wondering if there's a method that will reduce potential breakage.
I might start at the front and use a large wide flat screwdriver and carefully pry it off as close to each clip as I go along?scratchchin

I have to say I don't think the quality of the parts are terrible at all, its just they are 17 years old now and so uncommon they are very hard to replace.

Paint? Very curious now do you need a roof respray?

With reference to my comment regarding trim I know originally Holden wanted the trim around the windows to be chrome, budget wouldn't allow so finished up with a combination of plastic and rubber, I am sure there will be those that prefer the black trim look.

I agree with your strategy with removal spray lubricant as you move along.

I'm having a full re-spray, taking the car back to full red. If you look at my profile pic you'll see how it is now.
I will have the side decals remade and applied though - I like them and it will break the red a little. I'm also having the wiper arms refreshed as well as a new screen seal/finisher.
The car has plenty of poor paint on it from previous owners doing things on the cheap earlier in its life, and plenty of road rash at the front so I think its best to have the whole lot done. There is zero rust on the shell though I will say, which is impressive.
I've already bought loads of new OEM clips and fixings for things like the skirts and bumpers etc. to help it along.
Oh, and Omega metal door handles are on the way too. smile
I've put a lot of effort getting the mechanicals 100% since I've owned it, now its time to look at the cosmetics.

I haven't actually done this myself so be warned.
The black trim is clipped on to a metal rail that runs almost the full length of the roof.
If you start at the end above the windscreen and very gently lever the black trim upwards ( use something blunt and plastic if possible ) you can then get your fingers under the trim. As you lift up the trim tilt it towards yourself at the same time, this action should release the retaining clips, spray some WD on the clips as you go along if you can get to them.
I would also think about heating the rail up with a hair dryer, that might just make the plastic less likely to crack or snap off. I really would not attemp this on a cold day just in case.
No guarantee with this one mate, it might be one of those jobs that you wish you hadn't started.

Yep, I'll do it in the sun! Has to come off though. I'm not worried to be honest, they are good simple cars, I am stripping some stuff myself to try and help avoid any nasties, knowing I'll probably take more care than the shop.
Fortunately, the bodyshop did a full re-spray on a Monaro just a couple of years ago, so at least they'll have some idea. He said it didn't cause him any more problems than any other car.
They did a full re-spray on my old 300ZX years ago, and did a cracking job and I didn't find any issues following that job and that car was nearly 20 at the time. smile

Good look with everything I admire and love your enthusiasm, these cars really do get under your skin, so worth all the effort and time.

Annoyingly the EPC I've found online doesn't show roof trim removal for Monaros. ( G8 / VXR8 yes )
However there is lots of detail here for Monaro and VXR8s

https://nemigaparts.com/cat_spares/epc/pontiac

This url isn't directly findable from their main site, you have to start here.

Then there is this.
https://forums.justcommodores.com.au/threads/remov...

I stopped reading when they started talking about painting the trim in gloss black paint.

Ok.
So there are 6 clips per side. A black one at the front, then 5 white spanning back to the rear of the roof top.
There are no clips that run down the rear glass, instead in slides in a rail until it tucks under the horizontal lower glass trim piece.
I have successfully removed one side so far. Starting at the front, by peeling back the window seal a little, I eased up the front edge until the first clip snapped free. Then I moved along snapping free each of the 5 clips until I got to the rear of the roof. Then the trim slides forwards until it clears the rear window rail.
Slow and steady wins the race.
New clips and trims are still available if you bugger it up, the gutter trim is very expensive, the clips also (for what they are) and then there's shipping + taxes. frown
Trim appears to come with the clips if you order one. The clips are available separately as well.

I have the removal instructions on my computer somewhere.
I remember buying a set of them for a Monaro. They took about a year to get hold of, as Holden remade them but that was a long time ago.

I need to remove mine, in the near future for some paint work.
I cant believe the clips are about £10 each, I must be getting old.

Purely for my own curiosity, what purpose do the trims serve? As in, what would be the downside to having the paint / bodyshop remove the trims, and then as part of the respray, fill in the recesses?

I suppose they run down the sides of the back window so that section would still be needed?

Just wondering out loud really getmecoat

They cover over the welds and lip where the roof skin is welded to the side section. Purely a cost saving exercise, easier to manufacture, less prep to paint as you don't have to fill and prep the join of the panels.
Not a Monaro, but the images shows how the roof skin is just spot welded in the gutter.[url]
In terms of painting it, with the trims in, IMHO You would not be able to prepare the area properly. which would likely lead to the paint peeling in the future.

Well its gone!
Dropped it off at the body shop this morning.
I've got a dining room full of external trim, seals, door cards etc.. The car comes apart really rather well actually especially remembering they are now 17 years old.
Quite nerve wrecking this, handing over my pride and joy. I'm a right fanny, gave them a list of do's and don'ts, bag full of new clips and screws for the skirts, but hey its expensive job on a very rare car in truth worth a reasonable amount of money.
Be interesting to see how the sills are doing behind the skirts, and how the car looks behind the bumpers etc.. Not expecting anything, but they'll let me know and rectify if needed.
They are taking photos for me as the work is done, I'll post them at a later date for anyone interested.smile

I had a lot of spraying done on my one six months (or more ago). Still got a spare bathroom full of the rear interior that I haven't put back yet. smile
