ignition switch
Discussion
Hi all, and Merry Christmas.
Well i have fixed the suspension, steering rack arrived and fitted, all good...
except now the ignition switch is messing about!! the key i've used for the last couple of years has failed. (wont turn in the barrel)
spare key works OK tho, so tried to another key cut using that as a copy. Proper locksmith, computer copy, apparently identical !!
Dosn't work...! So do i need a switch assembly? or is there an easy fix, or mod available?
Cheers Yoss.
So reading your first post I’m guessing your spare key still works and you’re not immobilised, right?
All I can add is something I had happen with a 63 reg Fiesta. One morning my usual key went in but it wouldn’t turn at all. I then tried my unused spare key and still no luck. The RAC came out and after dismantling revealed that it was the very back of the ignition switch with the wires attached that wouldn’t turn, not the actual barrel - very odd. So then having hot wired it for me I drove to my local Ford garage who having ordered the part had it repaired for me within a couple of hours.
They’d never seen this problem before on a Fiesta!

Yeah, the spare key works so still abe to drive! the original key just stopped turning in the barrel.
Tried Oiling the lock when that did not work, put the spare key in with no problems. I was not keen on just having one key,
so used the spare to duplicate another. Which won't turn either... I see 'rockauto' do a replacement ignition barrel (in kit form) I think is it possible to easily swop switches?
Yoss.
based on what gm did on my old school nova , the electrics were easy to swap which was basically a heavy duty switch , the harder part was sorting the barrel out as it was clamped to the steering column in a metal tube with a large rivet holding it in place , i’m assuming same set up in the monaro ? , would the people who cut the new key not be able to re do the key ? i used timpsons they were very good
