So car was fine , ac working fine one day , not turning on the next , in 10 years it’s not been re gassed so had this done and it started working again , used it a week later and it’s not working , it appears to have a very small leak that the garage have not found yet , any pointers as to where they do go wrong , the compressor turned on but was not producing cold air but had warm ? pipes instead and was quite noisy or is it because it’s low on refrigerant ? , do the compressors fail i noticed on rockauto they had a few listed but i’m not sure which one is for a 59 plate hsv ls3 , the ac delco one , does the radiator part of the system fail , or pipes , i think this could be a bit of a £££ pit to sort out , any pointers or suggestions please

On RockAuto if you find the Pontiac G8 that has the LS3 in it, I would imagine you'll be fine to use that for drivetrain bits (steering rack aside hehe)

AC Delco are the OEM supplier for GM so that'll be decent enough quality if it is the compressor.

Not sure what else to suggest though in terms of fault finding. It's just an AC system, so anywhere should be more than capable of figuring out why it's not working, GM won't have done anything magical in terms of AC so shouldn't be too costly.

I generally get an air con service every 3-4 years, I also have it switched on most of the time so it gets used. I shouldn't say this but in 13yrs I've never had a problem with it.
In your case you need to find a good specialist ( not just any garage ) get the whole system leak tested, re- gassed and make sure they add some compressor oil.
As has been said these are basic systems and not over complicated, but they do need to be fully charged to be ice cold.
I believe if pressure in the system is too low they will shut down to prevent damage.

Rock auto sell them it’s about 500£ delivered , i’m just waiting to take it to the garage for a leak test , it looks like the compressor as there are signs of oil leaking from around it , so fingers crossed it is just that , it ac was serviced mid life of the car and it’s used regularly , i’m surprised the compressor has gone as the car is not high mileage but it’s looking like just one of those things , the ac is supposed to be flushed ? i’ve not worked how to do that yet

If the compressor has failed you need to be very careful when replacing it. There is a possibility that metallic debris from the crompressor has contaminated the entire system and it will therefore have to be flushed out otherwise the new compressor will be damaged. You will probably need a new receiver/ drier as well. Any competent air con specialist will be able to flush out the system, don't mess about with it yourself.
Mind you it might just be an O ring gasket failure which has shut the system down. These are located where the two metal pipes are bolted into the side of the compressor.
My brothers 2016 Mustang compressor failed at 8000 miles which is not uncommon on these cars, there really is no excuse for cheaply made parts.

Well , it looks like it’s the compressor , found oil coming out the seal on it by having a dye test done, ordered one through Rockauto , plus a few other items (and new gaskets ) that they suggest changing to get rid of any loose bits of metal and mean the compressor has a warranty on it , get it fitted some time next week

so update so far compressor and drier changed , the failure was due to a leak in the compressor , how easy is it to change the expansion valve does it need doing ? system will be flushed any way , on a separate note .. a monaro easy fix , the low pressure thinner pipe runs along the right hand chassis rail as you look at the front of the car , the chassis rail that runs through the engine bay , the bottom part of the ac pipe tends to rub on the chassis and eventuality fails , cut some rubber fuel line down the middle lengthy ways , then slide it under the ac pipe which stops it rubbing

forgot to mention , on the r8 best route to get the compressor out is via the front of the car , just enough clearance and no parts need removing to get it out

compressor changed as leak appeared to be from the compressor ,it was not the compressor so sort of 500£ down the pan so far and no better off , it’s the two ac pipes going to the compressor one has a leak , it’s a random leak no rubbing in the area it appears ac pipes are often very thin , rock auto again 205£ delivered including taxes , fingers crossed i will succeed this time

Typical....well at least you haven't got bits of debris floating around the system, so hopefully the new pipes will fix it. Thanks for the update.
