Getting the check engine warning coming up on the dash shortly after engine start up.
So I bought a code reader only to find that ....no codes are stored!

?? How do I find out what the warning means?

Have you tried using the cars engineering mode to see if any codes are stored?

The reader seems to report engine temperature and rpm, but not the vin number.
I'm wondering if this reader is compatible with the Monaro ECU.

It's been years since I've used the dash to read any codes.
What is the sequence of button pressing required to read the error code?

Hold mode + set together before starting.

Monaros aren’t OBDII compliant so some reader won’t work. Your actually trying to pull codes from the PIM. A Bosch tech 2 will do the trick.

Once in engineering mode, scrolling through the menus gives me this:

So what does that mean?

I bet that's the one for an aftermarket head unit.....

Yes it does have an aftermarket head unit fitted! I fitted it years ago as the OEM unit doesn't have RDS or AUX IN.

What problem is the ECU detecting with the Kenwood unit fitted? Funny how its only started reporting this problem after I got the car back on the road following a 2 year lay up. I fitted the Kenwood in about 2005 and it's never reported any problems until now.

Can the error be programmed out somehow?

It's not a problem....the single '1' return is just indicating the non-standard head unit.

I don't think you necessarily have an issue with your OBD reader, I had that warning pop up quite often about 15-20 mins into a journey. Luis Sola told me to replace my oil pressure sensor.....no, I didn't believe it either, but the warning never came back.

It's a shame that it's not possible to identify the actual reason for the check engine message coming up without a tech 2 reader, but at about £175 for one, I think I'll give it a miss, and take a punt on the oil pressure sender. Would anybody have a link to a suitable part?

I'm not sure I remember now but if you look at Rock Auto at the Pontiac GTO 6.0 they'll have the part (I guess yours is an LS2; if not search the LS1) Here's a 5% code that runs out in October - 11914845087460104 - they don't have parts for my current car

Thanks! I'll take a look. Mine is a 5.7 LS1.

I've ordered an SKP SK1S6713 oil pressure switch for a 2004 Pontiac GTO 5.7 from Rock Auto in the States. It should arrive towards the end of the week. I presume that it's not too hard to fit, whereabouts is it on the engine?

The oil pressure sensor is at the rear of the inlet manifold on top of the engine. It needs a deep socket to get it off. Sorry I can't remember the size but its on the large size!!!!!

27mm from memory. And be careful not to over tighten it because they can snap easily 👍🏼

Whilst OBD is supposed to be generic...it is not. And most readers sold in Europe are EOBD....Yes, the EU are involved to mess things up.

So do not expect most cheap generic readers to be of much use, and even then this generic OBD relates only to engine, nothing more.

A suitable Tech2 will offer proper information, or Enyouscustoms down under offer software that should work with most cheapish dongles to access things better for these vehicles.

No it’s a mash. Holden became obd2 compliant around 2007. Lots of cheap readers don’t work.

New oil pressure sender made no difference. In fact it made it worse as with the new sender "check engine oil" would intermittently come up on the dash as well! Put the original sender back in, no more check oil messages, but still get the check engine message on engine start. Does it every time with a cold or hot engine. Guess I need to take the car to somebody who has GM tech 2. I'm in Essex not far from Stansted Airport. Anybody?

Christ, sorry mate. The sender sorted it for me.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned O2 sensors.
They are also known to throw the engine check light.
But yes, rather than guessing, a GM Tech2 would hopefully shed some more light on the matter.
What would be wrong with a normal Vauxhall garage for this service? Or any other decent Indy.
