HI
While inspecting the steering rack on my 04 cv8 with a veiw to fit a new one when Pedders get one in stock.
There is some play in the front wheel bearing. (out of stock at pedders) Does anyone know an alternative source,
also is possible to just renew the bearings?

Thanks Yoss.

AC Delco 513217 Front left
513218 Front right.

I don't think you can just change the bearings, instead the whole hub assembly is changed along with the ABS sensor.

The rear wheel bearings are the same as the Calibra and nicely cheap, which is good because changing them is a brutally evil job in my experience (whereby I ultimately gave up and took it to a local garage hehe)

Don't expect change from £500 in labour from Walkinshaw for example for the rear ones...

Ouch that bites. Had local chap do rear on my VXR8 and that was £75.00 a side with me supplying bearings from Rockauto. But I assume it must be quite a different job on the Ro

Possibly, basically the bearing is a press fit into the trailing arm, and then there's a stub axle that is a press fit through the bearing.

I gave up at the point of trying to get the stub axle out as there was just nothing to get any purchase on to use a press. Ultimately it needed the rear arm taking off, which I attempted but one of the bolts when backed out pressed up against the bodywork, I've no idea how the garage thus got the arm off but there you go!

Both of them needed doing over about a 9 month period on my Ute, which has the same set-up as the Monaros. Even knowing what to do the second time it took them about 4 hours and I needed to replace the stub axle both times (first time I ruined the thread trying to get it out, second time the garage attempting to press it out of the bearing it actually bent under the pressure...) and they're about £200 from Rock Auto. A painful experience all round basically!

There is apparently a tool to make it easier to do, but I've no idea what it is.

the monaro you don’t have to take the arm off , it can lead to lots of other problems like fractured brake lines etc , a decent wheel bearing pulling kit will solve it , it’s a 45 or so minute job , i think i did a faq post , i had to do both the rears in my ute , the hardest part being stuck bolts which i luckily had none of

i was just correcting the bit about the rear arms needing to come off , which no disrespect to the fish that was why they charged a fair bit to do it , front bearings as above via rock auto and fed ex , so far i’ve only had rears fail and neither one was difficult to do , worth putting the bearing in the freezer before fitting it

Just a quick update, New hub delivered yesterday the 4th.

Fitted it this morning, now its nice and quiet again!! thanks again for the Rockauto link.

What are there steering racks like? they are listed about £100ish less than pedders.

Cheers yoss.

It would definitely be possible to do in situ, but it was beyond my hammering abilities, I could not get the stub axle out of the bearing, and then if I'd managed to do that, I wasn't entirely convinced I could get the bearing out, although I felt some threaded rod and a combination of bolts and washers could have allowed me to cobble together a puller of sorts.

How did you get the stub axle out? Would be good to know as the Monaro will need them doing at some point and it's the same design...I absolutely hammered the st out of it with a 4lb hammer and it didn't even flinch. Indeed when the garage did the other side the stub was so attached to the bearing it bent whilst being pressed out.

Below is the post i put on , the link to the au commodore site is no more , but i’m sure can be found again
Rear wheel bearing change Monaro
Hi it is possible to change the rear wheel bearing without taking suspension arm off , I googled and found a link on just commodores , :: vt commodore rear wheel bearing replacement ;; if you follow the link plus photos its as it says , the most difficult bit is removal of the old half of the bearing from the suspension drag arm , it's a combination of a thicker than an m12 bolt nuts and a number of washers , thick as u can get hold of with in reason , plus a heavy hammer , putting it back together took 30 mins max , I wd40 all visible bolts the day before , the problem about taking the bearing off to press it is rust related and greatly adds to the time of the Job , it took about 5 hours max to do , the bearing removal is most likely a two person job , one on puller one on hammer , total cost 150 £ .
