Hi all,

I'm a relatively new Monaro owner, picked up a 2004 CV8 with 81k miles on it back in March with the intention of it being my daily driver and only car for the moment. The bodywork is in pretty good condition with pretty much 0 dents or big scratches, a few small scratches and chips as you would expect with the age / mileage. Mechanically it feels great and I have a fair bit of history for the car.

Underneath it is not looking too bad although there are outbreaks of surface rust appearing and i definitely think that another couple of winters if left as is could see it deteriorate rapidly.

Has anyone got any experience with sorting these chassis' out with the view of protecting them for years to come?

I am aware that the chassis legs and sills can be problem areas is there anywhere else that should be checked?

Also does anyone have any recommendations in the North East of England for a garage / body shop that would do a good job?

Cheers,

Levi

I've used preserve and protect near Glasgow. It's the only type of work they do. Was very impressed with the work. Video and regular messages at work carried out. 5 minute stroll from garage to train station .

Front chassis legs can corrode where they go double skin.
Sills are (normally) found to be ok when side skirts are removed to check.
Fuel and brake lines corrode under the car and many are getting replaced now.
Otherwise there is nothing more to check than you would on any normal car. It is said that the Monaro isn't that well rust proofed from the factory so getting it properly cleaned up and treated is certainly a good idea, but they aren't what you'd call rusty buckets. Certainly not like the 80's and early 90's Vauxhall.
Can't advise on anywhere in the NE that does this though, however if you're not far from AAS in Newcastle, they are great for all the mechanical bits from a service to a full engine and gearbox rebuild. Lots of experience with the Monaro.

I got mine done at Waxworks Morpeth when I owned it, and they did a fantastic job. Sadly I don't think they're operating any more frown

If I was to get another Holden and it hadn't already been done, I'd probably take a day trip to Lincolnshire and use these guys;

I found a lot of water sat in the sideskirts, its a good idea to drill a few holes underneath them, help them drain out.

Is that the plastic part you drilled?

or buy some dinitrol on ebay about 30£ to 50£ and do it yourself , they do rust treating sprays and also once it’s treated then stuff to protect it , i have a few jdm cars and treat them with that plus also treat the holdens once a year if it’s needed , don’t forget the arches , mot time i have a look underneath and see what needs doing , it’s way better than waxoyl that just leaves a mess , they do a cavity spray too with a section of pipe for about 5£

Hi everyone and thanks for the suggestions.

I had a good look at the car again yesterday and there's some very very minor bubbling on a couple of the arches, and where the bumper rubs the wings there's a couple of orange spots I guess where the paint has come off between the panels.

I haven't written off doing it myself but ideally I need somewhere that would just sort the lot out.

Pro-tect look good but that's a 400+ mile round trip!

There's this place in Bisha Porkland? Doesn't look like they have a website though.

What about Autospray in Darlington. From what I've read they do excellent bodywork repairs, re-sprays etc., but they also do rust protection using Dinitrol products.

For anyone else reading this - I called Autospray Darlington and they no longer do the rust treatment / Dinitrol work. Shame as some of their examples look good.

And that, is a bummer!
Would have been nice to have an all-in-one body shop solution.
